Chelsea Handler blasted for 'tasteless' Hitler parody
WENN.COM

Comedian Chelsea Handler has upset Jewish leaders after dressing her chat show sidekick Chuy Bravo up as Nazi leader Adolf Hitler for a TV skit.

Officials at the Anti-Defamation League were not amused when the Mexican entertainer poked fun at Germany's World Cup win by appearing as the man responsible for the Holocaust on Handler's show Chelsea Lately.

A statement from Abraham Foxman, the ADL's national director and a Holocaust survivor, reads: "While we try to give comedians leeway and do not believe that Nazi jokes should be completely off limits, this was an instance of taking a Hitler parody to the extreme. It was tasteless, offensive and hurtful, both to Holocaust survivors and their families and to members of the German team and all Germans.

"This Hitler parody in itself was tasteless, but Chelsea Handler’s references to it throughout the program and her connecting it with Germany’s World Cup victory took the joke way overboard."

And while Chelsea Handler (whoever that is) was doing this, midfielder Mesut Özil of the German team was donating his entire half-million dollar championship bonus to provide surgery for children in Brazil, by way of thanking them for being good hosts.

The next step in USA soccer progress is increased attendance at MLS games. So far, I have not been able to find any definitive data which proves attendance and interest in the league (and minor leagues) has increased. There is ample proof that in terms of attendance, MLS ranks third among USA based leagues:

This in a league that has only one viable rivalry (derby in soccer terms) between Seattle & Portland. But it needs FAR more rivalries to increase tv viewership and stimulate sales of concession items. Increased interest in the MLS will stimulate American youths to turn pro which, in turn, will strengthen the Team USA and improve our chances of winning that Cup.

Used to be a big rivalry between D.C. United and L.A. Galaxy, but that's cooled off some.

Far more important than attendance is the fact that MLS has signed good television deals. Television brings in far more fans and far more money than stadium attendance.

As of last season, MLS viewership was lower than the WNBA:

MLS TV Ratings Are Lower Than the WNBA’s, Can the League Do Anything to Improve Them? | The Big Lead

It has been said that this may be attributable to the fact that Beckham is no longer playing and he was a darling to many female fans who knew nothing about the sport except for some good looking players and their glamourous wives or girl friends.

TV viewership did go up slightly and this may be attributed to coat tailing due to the WC.

But the only way to increase tv viewership and attendance on a permanent basis is creating and strengthening rivalries. As Blackie mentioned above, NY will have a new team - hopefully it will be a success and be a huge rival to the Red Bulls. Both teams can then rival Boston & Philadelphia - if so, tv viewership and attendance at the games will increase significantly. The league will then create a similar rivalry for LA-SF, Chi-StL, Mon-Tor, and others.

Louis van Gaal (pronounced "haal"), who guided Netherlands to the World Cup Semi-Final, has taken charge of his first training session as Manchester United's new manager.

Manchester United fans were gathered at the Pasadena Rose Bowl to watch Man United's players in training ahead of their pre-season Chevrolet Cup match against LA Galaxy, Van Gaal's first match in charge of the world's biggest football club.

And no-nonsense Van Gaal has exerted his famous authority at Manchester United already by obtaining assurances that the club do not embark on another big pre-season tour next summer.

The Dutch coach does not consider these tours adequate preparation for the Barclays Premier League season, which starts on 16th August.

Asked if commercial obligations could impinge on the football at United, Van Gaal said: 'More or less. We have to prepare the season and when you have commercial activities and dreadful distances, having to fly a lot and the jet lag, it is not very positive for a good preparation.

'The tour was already arranged and I shall adapt and United will do everything to apply to my rules, but I have said that already.'

Van Gaal hinted at issues with the commercial activity that is part of life at Old Trafford when he spoke to the media in England last week.

Louis van Gaal has exerted his famous authority at Manchester United already by obtaining assurances that the club do not embark on another big pre-season tour next summer.

The new United manager spoke on Wednesday morning in California ahead of Thursday night’s opening US tour game against LA Galaxy at the Pasadena Rose Bowl.

And it soon became clear that the Dutch coach does not consider these tours adequate preparation for the Barclays Premier League season.

Chief executive Ed Woodward has since played that down but Van Gaal has now returned to the theme, suggesting that next summer things will be different.

'Yes, I hope that (it will be shorter),' he added.

'But the club have already said that to me and I am very confident that it shall be.'

Welcome: United fans pack into Rose Bowl to watch their heroes train ahead of their game against LA Galaxy. It is thought that Manchester United have over 650 million fans worldwide

Van Gaal’s comments will certainly be viewed with interest by the United board given that it is the club’s vast commercial reach that has sustained it through the controversial years of Glazer (an American tycoon) ownership.

The current tour isn’t even that big by United’s standards. Last summer, for example, United were away for three weeks and flew vast distances between England, Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong.

During this morning’s press conference at a stadium it took Van Gaal and his players two hours to reach from their hotel in Los Angeles, the 62-year-old gave firm backing to the players he has inherited from David Moyes and insisted he will not buy anyone else until he has assessed his squad properly.

He added: 'At this moment, I cannot say anything about the squad and additions.

'I want to learn about my players and get to know them. When I am the coach and when I give the orders to my players to play a certain way, I want to see how they perform.

'That is why I cannot answer this question just now. I want to give all players the chance to show themselves under my guidance.

'I have to say that the players’ response to me so far has been fantastic. Maybe you think every trainer coach will say that when they are new, but I mean it.

'The players are very anxious to do what I say and follow the instructions of my assistants.

'The focus of what I have seen in training sessions is top level, but we have to see if the performances are also top level.'

Attending United's training session at the Pasadena Rose Bowl was former Manchester United, LA Galaxy, Real Madrid and England midfielder David Beckham, and former Manchester United left back Patrice Evra, who now plays for Italian giants Juventus.

Beckham posed for photos with Van Gaal and his old friend Ryan Giggs. Manchester United legend Giggs, who is now Manchester United's assistant manager, was Beckham's teammate at United when Beckham played for the club.

Beckham also posed for a photo with Manchester United new boy Ander Herrera.

This summer Manchester United have spent over £50 million on signing England left back Luke Shaw from Southampton and Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao.

But Van Gaal also has his sights on Netherlands defensive midfielder Daley Blind and Chilean central midfielder Arturo Vidal, both of whom starred for their countries at the recent World Cup.

David Beckham and Patrice Evra were surprise guests at Manchester United’s Los Angeles training base on Tuesday.

Beckham, who has returned to live in London with his family after five-and-a-half years in California, is back in town for United’s first game on their pre-season tour of the United States against another of his former teams, LA Galaxy.

He met up with new United boss Louis van Gaal and some of the players and is expected to attend the Chevrolet Cup match at the Rosebowl on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Evra is on holiday with his family in America and took the opportunity to say goodbye to his teammates after joining Juventus for £1.2million.

The France defender, who is ending an eight-and-a-half-year stay at United, wrote a farewell letter to the club and its fans on Monday.

‘This club is, and will always remain, in my heart,’ wrote Evra. ‘Joining and playing for Manchester United has been a privilege, a dream come true and my time here has been so memorable.

‘Through the good times and the bad times we have all stuck together and remained loyal. I have always said you don’t just join Manchester United, you join the family and long may that tradition continue.

Manchester United have won their first game under Louis van Gaal in style by putting SEVEN past LA Galaxy in front of 86,000 fans at the Pasadena Rose Bowl.

Just a day after bemoaning the fact that his club's busy schedule in America was threatening to disrupt his players’ preparations for the new season, the new United manager watched his team stroll through their opening tour game against a lamentable LA Galaxy - who are supposed to be one of America's strongest teams.

This is an iconic American stadium, which hosted the 1994 World Cup final, and United produced a clinical performance with which to grace it.

Watching them sweep Galaxy aside, it was hard to believe that it is the American team who are in the middle of their season and United who are supposed to be looking for form and fitness under their new manager.

In fact the only problem the English side had all night was actually getting to the stadium. Despite the presence of a police escort, United’s team bus took more than two hours to reach Pasadena from their hotel in Beverly Hills, meaning that at one stage the kick-off was in danger of being put back.

In the end, though, everything started on time and the night subsequently ran like clockwork for United who eased to victory through two first half goals from Wayne Rooney, one from Danny Welbeck, two goals for half-time substitute Reece James followed by two late strikes from Ashley Young.

Twenty-year-old English defender James - who was on loan at lowly Carlisle United last season - was playing his FIRST game for Manchester United and yet still managed to put two goals past Galaxy.

Manchester new boy Ander Herrera, who they bought for £28.85 million from Athletic Bilbao this summer, was the man of the match and he looks set to be a great player. He was outstanding all night.

The fact that Galaxy - one of the USA's most successful football clubs - were completely outclassed by United shows that America's best still has a long way to go before it can compete with England's, and Europe's, best.

As for United, their win means they lift yet more silverware - the Chevrolet Cup - and they'll be hoping it will be merely the first piece of silverware out of several that they'll lift this season after suffering a rare trophy drought last season.

Booked: Keane, Leonardo.

All smiles: Fletcher and Co will be hoping this is not United's only trophy this season

Much more of this and Louis van Gaal will be asking Manchester United to send his team on long pre-season tours every summer.

Just a day after bemoaning the fact that his club's busy schedule here in America was threatening to disrupt his players’ preparations for the new season, the new United manager watched his team stroll through their opening tour game against a lamentable LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

This is an iconic American stadium, which hosted the 1994 World Cup final, and United produced a clinical performance with which to grace it.

Roo beauty: United forward Rooney is congratulated by fellow England striker Danny Welbeck after his first goal. Three English players each scored two goals against Galaxy

Flying start: Welbeck celebrates putting United in the lead after just 13 minutes

Jumping for joy: The England World Cup forward celebrates in front of the United fans

With the stadium almost full – there were more than 86,000 here - on a beautiful, warm California night, United perhaps felt compelled to put on a good show.

Whatever the case they began well and scored in just the 13th minute.

Van Gaal chose to use the 3-4-3 formation he deployed with Holland at the World Cup and it will be interesting to see if he keeps faith in it. More noticeable in the first half, though, was the performance in the centre of midfield by new signing Ander Herrera.

The Spaniard was impressive from the start, passing the ball well and helping United to set the rhythm they needed and so often lacked under David Moyes last season.

Wing wizard: Antonio Valencia - playing in a right wing back role - crosses for United

Spot on: Rooney beats Jaime Penedo from 12 yards out to double United's advantage

Midfield general: New signing Ander Herrera was outstanding all night for United

You'll have to do more than that to impress me! Van Gaal looks on sternly as United romp to victory

United almost opened the scoring in the fourth minute as Herrera forced Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo to touch his shot over from 25 yards.

Soon after, though, they did break through as Juan Mata bustled through the middle, the ball broke free and Welbeck swept a first time shot past Penedo from the edge of the penalty area.

It was a superb, crisp finish from the England player and typical of what United were to go on to produce.

Galaxy did threaten briefly after the first United goal as Stefan Ishizaki crossed low for Gyasi Zardes and United goalkeeper David de Gea had to save sharply.

That was as good as it got for the American team, though, as United scored twice more before half-time.

The second goal came from the penalty spot after Antonio Valencia’s run and cross down the right brought a handball from AJ DeLaGarza.

Rooney stepped up to convert the penalty with his right foot.

Thumbs up: Van Gaal watches the game from the bench alongside his assistant Ryan Giggs

Case for the defence: Jonny Evans was part of a back three deployed by United

Then, in first half added time, Rooney profited from a terrible mistake from Galaxy defender Tommy Meyer to lift the ball over the goalkeeper and in to the goal.

With the game won, it was tempting to wonder if United would be able to come out and play with such intensity in the second half.

Van Gaal made sure there was no slacking off, though, by making nine half-time changes. Only Herrera and Darren Fletcher remained, with the Scot dropping back to the centre of defence for the second period.

Starting role: Spaniard Juan Mata impressed for United playing in behind the strikers

Close call: Shinji Kagawa bends a second-half effort just wide of the post

Midfield maestros: Darren Fletcher and Ander Herrera started together in the middle of the park

New kid on the block: Impressive young English defender Reece James (second from the right) is congratulated after scoring his first

Doubling up: James scored two in a matter of minutes in his debut match for United to stake his claim for a regular spot

Double salvo: Young scored twice for United in the dying minutes of the match

After the break, things actually got a little surreal.

Young left back James scored twice – from a Young cross shortly after half-time and then again from 15 yards as he ran on to a loose ball with six minutes remaining – while Young himself added two of his own in the last four minutes to complete Galaxy’s humiliation.

Both of Young’s goals came from Herrera passes and certainly the Spaniard’s night was an influential one.

At the end of the game, a pitch invader was flattened by a steward in the centre circle. It was the closest an American had come to making a perfect tackle all night.

Silverware: Darren Fletcher smiles as he collects the Chevrolet Cup after the game

lots of pro soccer 'friendlies'' online at the moment - but I just can't get into them at this time as it is all so anticlamitc compared to that very exciting WC action

Knowing myself, however, I'll soon be tuning into some of them ...

English Championship side Norwich City beat a "regional select side" from Italy's Aosta region 13-0 in a pre-season friendly - although they didn't know it.....

25 July 2014

Norwich City apologise to Italian club after claiming 13-0 win

"You can only beat what's in front of you," Norwich boss Neil Adams said after a 13-0 pre-season win... The only problem was they did not know what was in front of them.

The Canaries have apologised to Italian side Saint-Christophe Vallee d'Aoste after a case of mistaken team identity saw them claim to have hammered the Serie D outfit.

Norwich - relegated to the Championship last season - were due to face Italian Serie C side Novara as part of a training camp in the country, but the fixture was cancelled.

Replacement opponents were drafted in and Norwich took to their website after the meeting to report a double-figure success over Saint-Christophe Vallee d'Aoste on Sunday.

However after the fourth tier club pointed out that they had not played any match against Norwich, it turned out that the Canaries had in fact faced a "regional select side" from Italy's Aosta region.

Norwich's pre-season so far

Opponent............................ Result
Dereham Town (away).........1-0 win
Braintree Town (away)..........6-1 win
Aosta select XI......................13-0 win

"In our original match report for this warm-up fixture, acting in good faith on the basis of information given to the club, we incorrectly reported that we had played against local club side SC Vallee d'Aoste," said Norwich in a statement.

"In fact the game was against an Aosta regional select side and we are happy to put the record straight and apologise to SC Vallee d'Aoste and their fans for the misunderstanding."

After the game, manager Adams - still thinking they had faced a club side - said: "With all due respect to the opposition, they didn't really give us the test that certainly we wanted at this stage of the season.

"I would have preferred a tougher work-out for the players because banging goals in is great, but we need to be tested a little bit more than we were tonight."

With the Argies still recovering from their 1-0 loss to Germany in the World Cup Final two weeks ago today, they now have to suffer a £20,000 fine for displaying a Falklands banner in the World Cup warm-up match against Slovenia....

Argentina FA fined £20,000 for Falklands banner display

Fifa has fined the Argentina FA £20,000 after its players displayed a banner in support of their country's claims to the Falkland Islands.

The Argentina team posed with a banner before a 2-0 friendly win against Slovenia in La Plata on 7 June.

The banner read: "Las Malvinas son Argentinas", which translates as "The Falklands are Argentine".

Football's governing body said that it infringed rules on political action and team misconduct.

The UK and Argentina went to war over the Falklands from April to June 1982.

The conflict led to the deaths of 655 Argentine and 255 British servicemen. Three people from the islands also died during the conflict.

The 30,000 Swiss franc fine is the second time that Fifa has fined Argentina's football authority this month. A £200,000 fine was imposed for failing to bring Argentina players to pre-match news conferences at the World Cup in Brazil.

England's Premier League is set to become the first league outside of the Americas to use vanishing spray.

It will use spray produced by 9.15 Fair Play Limit, the same as used at the recent World Cup.

The vanishing spray came to global prominence when it made its World Cup debut at this year's tournament in Brazil where it was first used in the opening match between Brazil and Croatia.

The white foam, which the referee sprays from an aerosol can, is said to help prevent unnecessary delays by preventing the defensive team from encroaching closer than the mandated 10 yards from the ball during a free kick, and also by preventing the attacking team from illegally moving the ball from the spot where the referee awarded the kick. The foam vanishes after around a minute.

In the 1980s the first version was developed in England by a company consisting, amongst others, of 1966 World Cup-winner Sir Bobby Charlton and FA referee Neil Midgely. The English FA rejected the idea, failing even to attend field trials.

It was first used in a professional level in 2000 in the Brazilian top flight, the Copa João Havelange, and has also been used for several years in Argentina and the USA.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "At the Premier League we are open to developments that enhance the competition and it was clear from watching the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil that vanishing spray benefited referees, players, and all of those who watched the matches."

The foam will also make its debut in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, the annual knockout competition involving the 48 teams in League One and League Two (the third and fourth tiers of the English football pyramid) and in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. The FA in England are also planning on adopting it for the FA Cup.

The inventor Heine Allegmagne, from near Belo Horizonte in Brazil, called his company 9.15 Fair Play in reference to the wall having to be 10 yards (9.15 metres) from the free-kick.

The new Premier League season starts on Saturday 16th August and the vanishing spray will be used for the first time in that day's early kick off between Manchester United and Swansea City.

VANISHING SPRAY SET FOR TOP FLIGHT

By Press Association
30 July 2014

Toeing the line: Vanishing spray made its World Cup debut this year, in the opening match between hosts Brazil and Croatia

Referees in Premier League matches next season will use the vanishing spray that came to prominence in the recent World Cup in Brazil, it has been announced.

The 'magic spray' will be used at free-kicks to mark out where the wall should stand 10 yards away from the ball and to mark the exact spot where a free kick has to be taken and has been shown to prevent encroachment and speed up play.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "At the Premier League we are open to developments that enhance the competition and it was clear from watching the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil that vanishing spray benefited referees, players, and all of those who watched the matches."

Mike Riley, general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) which overseas top-flight referees, was an assessor at the World Cup and recommended it be adopted by the Premier League.

He said: "I saw first-hand the benefits of vanishing spray for referees, and for the game as a whole.

"The Select Group referees are looking forward to using it during Barclays Premier League matches next season."

The Premier League will use spray produced by 9.15 Fair Play Limit - the same supplier for the World Cup in Brazil.

The spray will also be used by UEFA in the Champions League and Europa League - it lasts around a minute before it disappears.

The inventor Heine Allegmagne, from near Belo Horizonte in Brazil, called his company 9.15 Fair Play in reference to the wall having to be 10 yards (9.15 metres) from the free-kick.

A 2014 World Cup referee uses vanishing spray in Rio de Janeiro. The spray is about to make its European debut when it will be used in next season's English Premier League, England's Johnstone's Paint Trophy and the UEFA Champions League and Europa League

and are ranked behind the Americans.

Only because most of America's matches are against the like of Honduras, Nicaragua, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Antigua and Barbuda, and Grenada and most of England's matches are against much tougher opposition in Europe against the likes of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands etc.

That's why FIFA's world rankings are often derided, because most international teams play mainly only other teams from their own FIFA region (CONCACAF for USA and UEFA for England).

The strength of English football compared to American football was demonstrated recently when Manchester United destroyed LA Galaxy, one of America's strongest teams, 7-0 in Los Angeles, with three Englishmen each scoring two goals, including one who was making his Manchester United debut.

Manchester United... made up mostly of foreign players.

The US is better than the Ingrish in soccer.

Because you have it easy against the likes of Canada, British Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos.

We are better... so much better. You should be ashamed because soccer is hardly given notice here and we're still better.
