So the problem here is that they were audited and the expenses brought to light?

Nope- The problem is the Govt knew about problems for quite sometime.

I wonder if she had access to his bank accounts? The Media should be all over that.

NDP MLA Jenny Kwan says she is repaying more than $34,000 in expenses for trips she and her family took to Bristol, Vienna and Disneyland that were paid for by the Portland Hotel Society.

In an emotional appearance this morning in Vancouver, Kwan said she trusted her husband Dan Small, who was a director with the Portland Hotel Society, when he told her that he had paid for the family's personal expenses when they accompanied him on a business trip to Europe in 2012.

She said he also told her he personally had paid for an upgrade during a family trip to Disneyland the same year.

The expenses Kwan has repaid include:

$8,323 for travel to the UK.
$3,175 for travel to Bristol.
$5,950 for flights.
$4,100 for transportation.
More than $10,000 for travel to Vienna.
$2,600 for a trip to Disneyland.

It would be interesting to sit down with some of these people to get a better understanding of their mindset. Sociopathic?

This is really a sad situation a lot of people are hurt by it. Especially those who need services.
They are not the only ones however Kwang unfortunately didn't know the society was paying the
freight for the travel etc. When she says she didn't know I believe her in this case. I have spoken
to her on a few occasions and sje is a pretty straight up person regardless of politics.
I think the other statement about socialists live well until the others money runs out is rather outdated.
I know of many Senators who lived really well they were appointed by a Prime Minister who made
a serious mistake he ain't socialist either eh.
There are the escapades of many people who are not socialist in both the private and public sector
who really screwed things up. Then there are any number of more left leaning folks who could
have made better choices.
Actually today I find it difficult to call the NDP socialist, they are left of center but have moved a long
way from the left over the past four decades, that might even be part of their problem.
in fact at times I find the NDP more negative that socialist

The Vancouver Sun's Daphne Bramham has a stinging column out today revealing more details of the theft, er, questionable spending choices of members of the Portland Hotel Society. Entitled "Sense of entitlement runs rampant among political and community leaders", here's a snippet:
There's a surprising lack of character in evidence these days among our free-spending, entitled-seeming political and community leaders. Even though many are better paid than ever, it still doesn't seem to be enough.

Here's my theory: The people working for the public good are rankled that guys like the wolves on Wall Street are making so much more money and, for what?

So, when some of those who are supposedly working to save the world have the opportunity to pamper themselves at someone else's expense, they feel entitled to take it. After all, they're the hard-working good guys.

I think it's a inflated sense of entitlement and they felt they were beyond reproach.

It should never be a surprise when people who prey on others choose careers that put them beside those they can prey on.
