Canadians avoiding flu shot could benefit from needle-less vaccines

While the next flu pandemic is on the radar of public health officials, Canada is still struggling to control the spread of seasonal flu, but needle-less vaccines could offer Canadians protection against influenza, a vaccine and infectious disease specialist says.

Dr. Andrew Potter, CEO and director of the Vaccine and infectious Disease Organization at the University of Saskatchewan, told CTV's Canada AM that despite efforts to increase influenza vaccination rates, the flu shot uptake is still low.

Part of the problem, he said, is that the general public still underestimates the impact of the flu.

"The public looks at flu as being 'just the flu' – it's something we expect every year," he said. "And yet, in fact, it's one of the top 10 killers in the country and indeed around the world," he said.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, up to 3,500 Canadians die from influenza and its complications each year, depending on the season. Children, adults over the age of 65 and patients with chronic health conditions are more at risk for flu complications. Getting a flu shot annually is one way of preventing the spread of the flu, the agency says.

And while the push to expand flu shot programs across the country by offering it in drug stores is laudable, more needs to be done, Potter said.

Mostly it is a ploy by BIG PHARMA to sell more drugs. Naturopaths also have a flu medicine in little pills that you take over a five week period. Can't prove that it works but I haven't had the flu in the 10 years I have been taking them as opposed to the one time I got a shot and was sick for 3 weeks.

This geezer got her flu shot a couple of weeks ago. I won't be giving someone else the flu which might kill them.
By the way year round our hospital has signs at the doors with containers of hand sanitizer asking people to use the sanitizer before entering. I use it as I leave as well because lets face it they have sick people in hospitals, ya know? So I also carry it in my car and purse and I use it fairly often! It will also help me avoid colds and flu's.

People still believing the flu shot is a government cash grab?

And I love people who fervently defend capitalism when it comes to Big Oil, but are abhorrently offended when it's not their industry of choice.

They put those jug of hand sanitizer there because of super bugs not the flu.
I assumed they put them there for any communicable disease, not just flu (I did say year round). Lately I hear people say hand sanitizers don't work, if that was the case why does the hospital have them at the doors?

Our flu shots don't cost us a thing, they are free. The Senior center here has the flu clinic every fall, and anyone can drop in take a number and get the shot. Naturally there are a lot of old people, but we also see young mothers with their babies and a few middle aged people as well.

Not a government cash grab. They foot the bill. It is a Big Pharma cash grab.

Oh they cost you all right. They cost all of us on our medical bill/taxes
