You have to remember buddy. I value my privacy and am well known for being anti-govt. I am involved with a couple of organizations that promote smaller, more accountable, less intrusive govt and the govt knows who I am and what I do already.

Do you wear a hat and sunglasses all the time so people can't find out the colour of your hair and eyes? How private do you want to get?

Then there are people who hate "smart meters" because they are afraid someone will find out how much they use the toaster. -:)

I suspect your right and they probably do take samples of suspected criminals without their knowing, but at least it's not an official sample and probably can't be used in a court of law. If that's any cancellation !!!

*consolation*

You're absolutely right, BUT it may lead them to the perpetrator and hence to other evidence that will stand up in court. (If that's any consolation)

As private as I possibly can. I refuse to give my name & address to return a product I paid cash for and have a receipt. I refuse to give any unnecessary personal information to anyone for any reason.

You don't get it. It isn't just using the toaster (not that they need or are entitled to that info at all), it is about the slow erosion of all privacy. Of course the powers that be are not going to just pass a law that on January 1st we become a totalitarian, police state. It has to be brought in slowly one little step at a time under the guise of it being for public good or things that 'don't really matter'. Well it all matters! Every time we allow the govt and corporations to remove even a tiny little bit of privacy or freedom it is another step towards the totalitarian society.

So you are ok with unconstitutional actions as long as they lead to something that would stand up in court? Doesn't matter it was obtained illegally (which BTW makes evidence inadmissible) as long as someone goes to jail.

Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.

I'm of two minds.

1. it's a breach of rights.

2. it's indiscernible from current policy regarding fingerprinting, so what is the real difference?

I was thinking the same thing with regards to fingerprinting. They should only be doing that upon conviction too. Or at the very least they should destroy them if you are aquitted.

They are supposed to destroy them if acquitted or the charges are dropped. They just "don't have the resources" to do it so they stay on file.

I also have a bridge to sell over the Hudson river if you're interested.

Of course. That makes total sense. Silly me for not seeing that before.

Doesn't it take more resources to save them?

You are getting paranoid, Nick. I don't recall having to provide my name and address when returning an item I paid cash for. I do recall having to "initial" the invoice acknowledging receiving the cash. But what's the big deal, people hand over their credit card all the time that has their name right on it. If you watched the T.V. news at all you'd be aware of all the scams being perpetrated right now.

Go to Canadian Tire or Superstore or many other large stores. The only reason Costco doesn't ask for it is because they already have it from your membership.

I like it when staff know my name. I live in a smallish town where we all know each other pretty much anyway. What I don't like is my personal information in a database controlled by some corporation.

Maybe I am a little paranoid but having experience with govt intelligence services I know a lot of stuff is not really far-fetched and is actually quite possible and likely.

In the end I would rather be paranoid and be wrong than not be paranoid and be wrong.

Actually the smart meter provides me with more freedom than it removes. You can go online and see hour by hour how much "juice" you are using and identify the appliances that are using the juice and how much and the cost.

Sure they can, sneeze in a tissue, comb your hair, pee in a urinal,,,,,etc etc lots of opportunity to get a sample.
Doing that is a get out of jail free card.

and when you start getting targeted advertising and sales calls for more energy efficient appliances....you'll know why.
