Canyon High School in Anaheim, Calif., has apologized to a 16-year-old girl who was forced to change out of an NRA T-shirt which was said to have violated the school’s code against clothing that promotes or depicts violence or criminal activity.

Haley Bullwinkle’s shirt featured a silhouette of a man holding a rifle over an American flag and the words, “National Rifle Association of America, Protecting America’s Traditions Since 1871.” The Los Angeles Times reports:
On Thursday, the school changed course and apologized to the 16-year-old and said campus staff will be trained so that “an incident like this does not occur again.”

In asking the student to remove the shirt, school officials said the depiction of the rifle was a violation of the school’s dress code. When the student’s parents wrote to the school’s principal, suggesting that administrators had infringed on their daughter’s constitutional rights, Principal Kimberly Fricker responded by sending the parents the school’s policy on clothing that depicts violence.

Ridiculous! The shirt doesn't promote violence. It promotes an organization that promotes the right to legal and responsible gun ownership.

The National Rifle Association of America (NRA) is an American nonprofit organization[5] founded in 1871 that promotes firearm competency, safety, and ownership, as well as police training, marksmanship, hunting and self-defense training in the United States. The NRA is also one of the United States' largest certifying bodies for firearm safety training and proficiency training courses for police departments, recreational hunting, and child firearm safety

In grade 8 I had a "if you're Canadian show me you beaver t-shirt" Teachers in elementary laughed. The following fall they freaked out in high school and tried to make me turn it inside out. I refused and got a week off.

All part of social engineering. Someone is going to tell us all what we can
and cannot wear. Well I am not a fan of the NRA however I am even more
disgusted with the current attitude in many institutions. NRA is not a violent
organization. They are al lot of things I disagree with but this case is different.
What is coming for the politically correct group is one huge backlash and it is
coming soon. I think people are fed up with almost everything. The reason
is because be hanged if people are going to be told how to live and what to
say and what to think and what they can do and think
Enough already

Yup, sounds like some teacher or administrator made a boo boo. In this day of 24 hour news and Internet forums, it becomes a much bigger issue than it should have been
