A New Month, A New Protest

Earlier this year, "activists" tried to force the Pidgin restaurant, located in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES), to shut down. Now another restaurant, Cuchillo, started by fledgling entrepreneurs John Cooper and Stuart Irving, is facing a similar fate. Here's the way Cooper described the situation in an interview last month:
"We're just a couple of guys who put in every cent we had...and built a restaurant. And now we're trying to focus on its operations."
One of the protest leaders is a young woman named Kim Hearty. She's also a member of the Executive of Vancouver's COPE party. A recent investigative piece into Hearty and her comrades is most informative.

If you're on Facebook and would like to show Cuchillo a little support, feel free to give them a 'Like'.

What are they protesting? The location of Cuchillo restaurant (261 Powell Street) stood vacant for over 15 years.

I still think Vansterdam has a chance to redeem itself and banish these 'community organizers' before it's too late.

I just don't get the logic on this... The protesters want to shut down any commercial activity unless it's a some form of action that provides housing?.. I'm kinda wondering if they are of the belief that truck loads of cash will just magically show up to execute this fantasy ideal.

Here's a sign that one of the rocket-scientist protesters left as their directive... Tell me that it won't result in the ghetto-ification of the DTES

Vancouver needs an earthquake. All those run down brick buildings on the East Side will crumble into dust and the junkies will have nowhere to congregate.

They'll just move outside the core into the neighbouring communities - Parks, alleys, etc.

Hell, I'm just waiting for some kind of proposal to transform Stanley Park into an official shanty-town.

When communities redevelop area they bring in business and change the class of the neighbourhood.
That of course would mean they are not going to concentrate on breaking the cycle of poverty, they
are going to change the equation that will make it too expensive for the poor to reside there.
Remember these old run down buildings are the only home they have known and fear it the
magic number in the equation.
I agree the place has to be cleaned up. Think about it this way. The only power these people think
they have is sticking together even in misery. If any progress is made at all it would be bad for them.
What a hell of way to live and what a hell of a state mentally to be in.
Actually this mentality should scare us a little into understanding what they are about to protect the
future of society. They are not bad people they are mentally disturbed collectively
Oh and you can't shut down protesters or organizers in an open and democratic society because if
we do that, we will become just like them over time.

They are probably protesting that they are shoed away by staff and aren't allowed to panhandle off of the patrons.

True - and they also bring in more tax revenues to the city and province... Some day, although not in my lifetime, a politician will get into office that has the intestinal fortitude to actually deploy those monies to the homeless population..

That of course would mean they are not going to concentrate on breaking the cycle of poverty, they
are going to change the equation that will make it too expensive for the poor to reside there.

The Feds, Province and city have failed at that endeavor for well over 50 years now... Maybe it's time for a new approach

Remember these old run down buildings are the only home they have known and fear it the
magic number in the equation.

That is an unfortunate reality however, the day will come where the owner is forced to spend money upgrading it (dealing with the deterioration) or bull doze the site... I don't think it takes too much to figure out which one will be the viable option

Oh and you can't shut down protesters or organizers in an open and democratic society because if

No, you can't shut them down, but it would be nice if these tards - just once - gave a little thought to their idealistic demands and thought about reality

If I didn't have a pot to piss in I could think of cheaper places to live in than downtown Vancouver. That's what I don't understand, what the hell are these people aspiring to? If they all found 100k/yr jobs they would still have to live on the streets.
