London: Britain's government is setting up a new terrorism task force to tackle radical preachers and extremism, days after suspects apparently linked to extremist Islamist activists brutally killed a British soldier on a London street.

Home Secretary Theresa May said the group will look at whether new powers and laws are needed to clamp down on religious leaders and organisations who promote extremist messages and target potential recruits in jails, schools and mosques.

Thousands of people are potentially at risk of being radicalised in Britain, Ms May told the BBC.

"We need to look across institutions like universities, whether there is more work we can be doing in prisons," she said in the television interview.

The force will include senior ministers, London's police chief and the head of the MI5 domestic security service, and is expected to meet within the next few weeks.

They should haul in religious leaders on this one too. I think they should be forced to help clean up the mess, they bear some of (most of) the responsibility for keeping the discourse between believers civil and sane. The government alone can't fix what is happening in a fight that's based in religion.

While religions are standing up and speaking out against events like these, there needs to be action beyond that.

It's a double edged sword. Laws that would 'clamp down' on the extremism can also be used to muzzle free speach and discent with public policy. Look at the HRC stuff in Canada. A nice idea that one can not make hate speaches but put in the hands of petty bureaucrats who abuse it.

Perhaps making them responsible somehow for the actions of their flock might work better. You preach and make somebody go bonkers, you get some jailtime as his/her cellmate.

The mentally ill can twist a message though, so that's tricky.

The people who fall pray to religious zealots are the ones who don't bother to read and follow the Bible, Koran, Vedas, Torah, Buddhavacana etc but are told how to behave and what to believe.

Why not just deport them to their country of origin? OR if the are UK born send them to the lockup on the Isle of Wight for a few days of thinking over their position? No change? 24 ft row boat to anywhere but UK waters. Good riddance too.

France after the Madrid bombings- An Imam in France praised the attack- 6 weeks, not 6 years and he was deported from French soil.
6 weeks.
And personally I do not give a hoot if these types are under threat of being tortured if deported to their home country.
The UK has been trying for years to deport a known threat.

And for citizens that perpetrate hate attacks in retaliation- a real long prison term. All things need some balance.

The Human Rights Act.

We've been trying to deport Abu Qatada to Jordan, where he has been charged with terrorism offences, for ages now but unfortunately the Human Rights numpties keep telling Theresa May that "it is against his human rights to deport him".

So he is able to stay in Britain, where he gets to stay in a luxury large house and drive a luxury car, all paid for by the British taxpayer.

Teach people what islam really teaches and they won't be conned so easily.

Bible as Literature

I agree with not all but many of the points made on this site, and I profess neither the Christian nor the Jewish faith. It just makes sense. The same could apply to the Qur'an and Ahadith.

That'll just force the extremist nutbars to get quiet in public and start having secret meetings. I doubt they have enough manpower to have people following all the radicals and listening to their recruiting spiels. But, perhaps the best way to deal with it all is to tell everyone to suck it up for a while and turn the place into a police state. Tough situation, IMO.

That's what the BNP want. There may be better ways than that to go about dealing with the issue.

Here is the problem. Religion has no place in Govt and Govt has no place in Religion. Should weekly sermons be preapproved by the Home Office in Dingleberry on the T'ween Cheeks?

Gov't should react when whatever religion or religions start kicking up a fuss, though. Free speech is nice and all but when it's used as an excuse to disrupt the welfare of the public, it should be shelved and the dissent smacked down hard by the instrument whose job it is to act in the public interest, IMO. If anyone wants to preach, let them do it in their churches, synagogues, and mosques.

...or can't read. Most of the Taliban can't read the Koran. The Catholics tried to keep the bible out of the hands of the commoner by only having it in Latin.
