Well, there are times that those fishermen are simply talking to one another, and yes, your point would hold true, they'd be butting in. But, there are times they've flagged someone down to ask about the fish, or to tell them they should be fishing in the lake too. At which point, someone may give their opinion about the lack of fish. Or, perhaps they're a fellow angler, casting a line into the same lake, and they may tell them it might make sense to put a hook on their line. Or to not eat the boot they reeled out.

Why would you feel the need to stop, every day, to tell them there is no fish in that big lake???????
To continue in the same vein as your metaphor: Some people might be glad to know that, and it would gain a certain credibility from their observation that they never catch anything, but in general I'd be inclined to leave them alone as long as they leave me alone. (And for the record, posting claims in a public message board I frequent doesn't count as leaving me alone.) It's when they flag me down, insist that there ARE fish there despite all evidence to the contrary, and tell me I'd better start fishing there too if I know what's good for me, and in fact everybody should be required to fish there regularly...well, that I find a little annoying.

If the myth of hell weren't taught to children (child abuse at best), I wouldn't argue that those who cry "Hell for heathen infants" should be isolated in asylums.

You must be one of those that goes outside to argue with Jehovah Witnesses when they drop their little flyers in your mail-box without even knocking on your door?
