Lets break it down for a year.
12 000$ for house
2 200$ for heat and electricity.
9 000$ for grocery
5 000$ for car and repairs
3 000$ for gas for the car
1 500$ for insurance
2 000$ for birthdays
2 000$ for holiday visits and presents
5 000$ for your second car
3 000$ for phone Internet cable

Where at 45 000$ and we haven't even talked of health care
Like dentice, glasses, chiropractor.
Then we need to add putting away money for retirement.
You need to replace at least one appliance or bed every year.
New pillows, etc....

Add a good 5 000$ for that and that's if your lucky.
Would you call a middle class's family " middle class" if they have no pets? Not me.
2 000$ more for the pet.

If you own your home, you need yard stuff & repaires on your home.
That could add up really fast on you.
5 000$

What are we at to live middle class now?
57 000$

Ok we need to save for the kids school
2 000$

Then you have clothing
2 000$

Every middle class family should have at least 1 000$ a month of disposable/or for savings.
12 000$

Anything under 75 000$ a year.
A family is not living a full middle class life style.
Angst how many people have you got living on this? It needs to be a percentage of one's earnings. That's how it works. And needs must come before wants so you start with basic, shelter, food, electric, heating, transportation. A second car is a luxury not a given so is cable. Public transportation. I did it for years until I could afford a car...I was well into my 20's by then. Cable? Seriously...I didn't have a tv when mine broke, went without. I don't think young people can expect to live a middle class life. That comes after scrimping, and sacrificing and saving. It is not a given. 8O At least not in my mind nor for my generation. We did without until we could afford it. Otherwise, there is debt and it becomes deeper by the month. There goes the relationship.

Middle class lifestyle? Where? Buckingham palace? My wife can feed about 20 people for $9000 a year. $2000 a year for birthdays, is a necessity? $3000 for phone and I/N? I get Phone, Cable and high speed internet for $2200 a year. Second hand stores are a good option for most things. You're not living in the real world. -:)

That's what it would cost me to have a full middle class life style with my family where I live.
Obviously I don't live a full middle class life style since I don't make that kind of money, and
My wife only works a small part time job.

With 75k a year. No problems.
I'd not have to budget and cut on things.

9000$ of food a year is only 150$ a week of groceries. That's normal for growing kids and a hard working construction worker. I eat very well with good foods. Your wife must like the cheap stuff.

Don't forget that this is what it cost for someone today to establish himself as middle class.
Once you have been living middle class for over 20 years cost of living drops a whole lot.
I didn't even include taxes payed on income, property & water. So lets add 10 000$ more
Right there on top of all this.

And if you both work then add 9 000$ of child care.

Crazy leprechaun.

Basically, I agree with you Sal, that is for a person to present an opinion and debate it, but this has gotten a little beyond that, now it's just become a repetition about selfishness and greed. We've all heard that about 10 times now, not to mention the denigration of a certain demographic. There is nothing wrong with suggesting a shift in Gov't spending, but his proposal does not guarantee an improvement in the shift! -:)

JL, many of the repeats have been a result of the same questions I receive over and over and over again.

Just wondering, how many proposals that you hear from governments do you believe are going to work 100% as indicated? It's a step in the right direction. Any movement to lower the clawback amounts is a step in the right direction.

It may or may not be. But one thing we know sure it is going to cost $millions. Also it is possible you would be taking it away from someone who makes large charitable contributions! -:)

I keep seeing it's not fair, it's not fair, it's not fair. Maybe so.

I haven't found many things in life to be fair. Least of all would be re-distribution of wealth which is essentially what you are proposing. It doesn't work.

Who are you talking to, those that wish to maintain the current system or those that wish to change it?

Make up your mind, originally you were all for increasing the clawback amounts!

Who are you talking to, those that wish to maintain the current system or those that wish to change it?

Obviously those who think the current system isn't fair. It's not rocket science!

I was talking to the OP to be precise.

That's kinda what I figured however, the OP isn't proposing a redistribution of wealth. The OP takes issue with one of the current methods of redistributing wealth. You are right though, it doesn't work...at least not for the benefit of the nation. It only works for those with their hands out.

Karma does spread like a fragrance on the wind.
Or as was translated by a Holy Man on a Mountaintop to me- On occasion it means- Shxt replies have their own scent.
May that wind waft your way.
