NBC reporter Ida Siegal, while covering a May Day rally in Manhattan Wednesday, denied seeing any flags bearing the hammer and sickle and later said she didn’t even know what they meant, when confronted by an anonymous cameraman on whether she would report on the Communist imagery.


VIDEOGRAPHER: You’re from Channel 4 news, I see. Are you guys going to show any of the people with hammer and sickle flags and signs?

IDA SIEGAL: I haven’t seen any of those flags.

VIDEOGRAPHER: You haven’t seen them?

SIEGAL: No, I haven’t. What do they represent?

VIDEOGRAPHER: The hammer and sickle, you don’t know what that represents?

You know, in her defense, a lot of people simply don't think what comprises a symbol that they are used to seeing. I think if you took a poll of the average Joe walking down the street 'what do hammer and sickle mean?', you'd probably stump every tenth one. Especially any under 30 years old.

Bloody idiot probably went to university and took Journalism........the biggest farce of a pretend degree since Sociology.

Used to be journalists had degrees in history, political; science, or even English.......so they actually knew something.

How many clueless teens and twenty somethings were walking around with Che Guevara or Charles Manson t-shirts in the late 90's early 2000's? Those aren't symbols per se, but new generations read things differently than we do because they don't carry the same baggage. I wouldn't expect someone who grew up after the fall of the Berlin wall to comprehend it's meaning.

My daughter came up to me the other week and said "I just realized Mom that there is going to be an entire generation of kids out there who won't know that this # is a number sign." They'll see it as a hash tag only.

Yeah. If I had a time machine, I'd go back and tell Che Guevara "Hey, Che, your legacy is going to be a picture of your face on a T-shirt that costs 50 bucks at the Gap and is made by exploited workers in Haiti."

People in many cases don't care, some today even identify with some of the policy.
some of those who were for revolution would be selling their own T shirts for a lot
of money and living well.
Most of the revolutionaries of the sixties went on the be business people and made
all kinds of money. The hammer and Cha pic\s are a fad a phase and are designed
to be in our face. If we don't react it too shall pass

If you can name a compound stronger or more flexible that has had a greater impact I'd love to hear about it.

Nothing has ever made an impact on humans greater than the steel plow.

They represent the power of steel. If you can name a compound stronger or more flexible that has had a greater impact I'd love to hear about it.

Nothing has ever made an impact on humans greater than the steel plow.
