Mankind is at a crossroads, Woody Allen once quipped: “One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly.”

Canada’s relations with its aboriginal people are also at a crossroads but, fortunately, one of the potential paths forward promises a more auspicious outcome than Mr. Allen’s doomsday scenario.

The Macdonald-Laurier Institute think-tank laid out the options in two important essays released Wednesday. One paper, by Ken Coates and Brian Lee Crowley, outlines an optimistic vision where aboriginal and non-aboriginal Canadians find ways to collaborate on natural resource development, to the benefit of all.

A more pessimistic report, by Douglas Bland, suggests that Canada has all the necessary “feasibility” conditions for a violent native uprising — social fault lines; a large “warrior cohort”; an economy vulnerable to sabotage; a reluctance on the part of governments and security forces to confront aboriginal protests; and a sparsely populated country reliant on poorly defended key infrastructure like rail and electricity lines.

Don't worry, if the Canadians ever find themselves confronted by a group of primitive dark people armed with spears and sharp pieces of dried fruit all they have to do is ask the British for advice. The British used to have lots of experience of things like that.

Yeah, because trying to rob primitive people of their homes the way the British have a history of, is the same thing as trying to defend your own home against angry modern fellow citizens.

BTW, I totally want to publish 'The Grim Report' one day. I was disappointed that wasn't the actual report title.

Judging by all the idiotic remarks made by a lot of people on these forums, I would say the latter scenario is more likely. One, the dominant culture is not willing to even try to understand anything that does not fit into their preconceived ideas about aboriginal people or their plight. Two, There is an attitude of "Our way, or the highway." All dem injuns should become just like us.

I don't see aboriginal people have a whole lot of choice but to stand up for their rights in a society that not willing to compromise. In our mindless consumer mentality, we feel we are entitled to rape and pillage the land and roll over anybody who stands in our way. Well, I think aboriginal people are beyond accepting being run over any more. What goes around comes around. It may soon be time to pay the piper for our arrogance and greed.

No the native peoples are going to go a different route. They are organizing in the best most
productive way. Putting people through university for business management and lawyers and
so on. They will be able to use the system to call us on our most dishonest achievements over
the years.
First the white man came and took the best land for farms leaving the Natives on Reserves
outside the main stream of society. They used the churches and the government to destroy
the cultural fabric of the society they had and tried to force them to be just like us. Didn't work.
Now of course all that lousy bush land and rural outback has the mineral resources we need
and has proved to be the best land. Now the focus is to have these peoples be like us and own
their own land on the reserve so they can sell if they want to. Isn't that nice, There are oil men
with trinket factories in their basement thinking they get a second chance to shaft their native
brothers. Think again won't happen this time. We are the victims of our own greed and pure
dishonest dealings.
Native peoples have every right to stand up for themselves. If the law is crooked what else would
you do? The truth is, these people will win because you need what they have and they are not
going to give it to you or sell it cheap. We have to forget cheap and start thinking quality again.
The Aboriginals don't view the rape and pillage of resources like many of us and that is a good
thing. Welcome to the concept where we have crapped in our own nest and now we contend with
the smell. Their insurrection would have a rightful name. It's called Justice

Yup, every injun is a drunk and a lazy good for nothing. Bill will save us all from ignorance.

I feel a Chris Rock bit coming on..... "There's like a civil war goin on with natives and there's two sides. There's natives, and there's warriors. and warriors have got to go...I love native people, but I hate warriors, boy. Oh, I hate warriors. Boy, I wish they'd let me join the Klu Klux Klan [sic]. ****, I'd do a drive-by from here to Manitoba."

What the poor deluded fools posting here don't understand is that I live in the middle of the largest concentration of Aboriginals in Canada-at least 40,000 of them.

Which in the end amounts to SFA-you can't swing a dead cat here without hitting some agency or other that claims to help/aid/empower/enlighten or otherwise speak for abos-the downtown east side in particular is thick with aid.

But those numbers also tell the story-tiny tiny numbers of alienated nobodies amount to ZIP in the overall picture (unless you're someone looking for something to feel guilty about).
