Wondering if anything will really change considering his replacement has been working under Burke for awhile. I won't lose any sleep over his firing that's for sure.

I don't think anything has to change as far as the building of the team, as the team is much better than
it was, their biggest problem in the past two or three years has been 'goaltending', but my take on
this situation is that brian burke, being so blunt and very impatient, was not a good fit for the
new owners, and nonis, being the exact opposite to burke,(that is probably why they got along so well),
'is' a good fit, and he is very patient, and will work well with the owners.

I feel the problem was the luongo situation,( and burke hated those longterm contracts), always said
he would 'never' buy into any of them, so he probably willingly stepped back, and lost his position
while sticking to his principals, (not a bad thing), so the owners now will work with nonis, who will
love bringing luongo into the toronto franchise, as he has always loved luongo, and of course was
responsiblle for him coming to vancouver.

So......it ends up being a good thing all round. Thanks for the explanation talloola, I appreciate it.

How many of the 30 franchizes are losing money? Is it fair for a few of the franchizes to be supporting the ones losing money? I would guess that one of the problems the money losers is having is the inability to fill seats. How do you fill the seats? By lowering the admission fees! If that is done and they are still losing money then there is one other solution. Reduce salaries! Does that make sense?

just an example of ticket prices in cities where hockey isn't much thought about.

florida is offering- one ticket, a drink, a hotdog and a sweater for $7.00 to entice
people back to the game.
seems impossible, but I heard it on the radio this morning.
Funny how you always mention 'reducing' salaries, but owners would just love
making more profit at the expense of lowering salaries, but I guess that
doesn't matter does it.
The owners have always made big profits on the backs of the players who bring
the fans into the building, it is a partnership, not welder working for a boss.

it is the entertainment business, not a trade, or a ditchdigger, or an electrician,
the owners have a commodity to sell, so profits are shared however they manage
to negotiate it during bargaining.

Re the $7.00 tickets, there's a method to their madness.-:)
Re the salaries- the customers are the same people who patronize the electrician and the welder and are quite likely to be electricians and welders themselves. -:)

so I assume then, that you are against the salaries of 'all' entertainers, (entertainment business), who make a very
good living, by entertaining the public, who want to come and enjoy whatever you do in that field.

or is it just hockey players, I would think that because almost 100% of hockey players come from humble
beginnings, middle class or below, someone like you, would wish them all the best, having reached the
level, (after years of training) to receive the rewards of what the entertainment business has to offer.

or, do you just want the owners to make the big profit, and the player to work for welders, electrician
wages, would that make you happier, and would you think that fair?

even though no one but an apprentice would be interestedin watching a welder,
or such trades work, (boring) and not worth 1.00 admission.

I'm not sure what the answer is. How about admission to N.H.L. games being on par with the price of admission to the movies?

well, you didn't answer any of my questions, so I give up, and the idea that admission should be the
same as a movie is a joke, and an insult to the players, but if that is what you think, that is your
right.

I guess we have to agree to disagree on this one. But do you really believe Sid the Kid should feel any more insulted than say Mel Gibson or Julia Roberts?

if you went to watch mel gibson or julia roberts 'live' anywhere, it would cost you.

they receive royalties each time their movies are shown, adds up to big bucks, has nothing to do
with what it costs each person admission, hockey players do not receive royalties, it is one
time only, each game.
the actors also receive big dollars for making the movie.

I imagine you feel the same about nfl, mlb, nba, and mls players as well.

to compare an electrician, a welder, etc., to a hockey player and state they should get similar
wages is ludicrous.

you still don't seem to get the difference between sports/entertainment and a trade.
what about all the concerts that people have to pay well to see, or a ballet, or a piano concert,
or a opera singer, all under the same umbrella as pro sports/entertainment.

They all spent their childhoods on up to adulthood training, training, training till their skills
are good enough to be accepted into the pro ranks, so that people would pay to watch them.

Then it depends on demand for their appearances, the more demand, the higher the costs.
That is why it is much more expensive to watch a hockey game in canada and northern u.s., than those
other places where bettman blew it by shoving teams there, where there was very little demand.

If one of your grandchildren grow up and are good enough to make it to the pro ranks of any sport,
and become good enough to be offered a large contract, remember to tell him/her he doesn't deserve it.

yes, we'll definitely agree to disagree on this.

Well folks - how did the season opener go for you?

I watched Bruins defeat the Rangers and liked the intensity of the match. Earlier, I watched Pens beat Flyers. Both matches featured good intense play as the teams were in mid season form.

Yeah, I just saw that the Beaners beat the Rangers so as far as I'm concerned the season isn't off to a perfect start, but the Canucks later on tonight should ease the pain! -:)

glad hockey is back, now I have some quality television to watch. I've been having trouble finding anything worthwhile
on the tube, don't know how many of those shows make it onto the screen, pure junk.

canucks/anaheim right now, 2-2 after one, pretty good game, lots of effort and good skating, a bit of
rust, but that is to be expected.

well, after first period, canucks lost their legs, their goalie didn't save them.

ducks came to life, and played a pretty good game, and hillier was very solid.

don't know how many of the ducks played overseas, does make a big difference, they seemed to have
the legs to play 60 minutes and canucks didn't.

I didn't get a chance to watch much but I was watching the scores...

Pens over Flyers, yay!
Sens over the Jets, meh (not emotionally invested in either and same for my fantasy leagues).
Chicago over LA, wow: way to ruin the Banner Ceremony, Blackhawks!
Bruins over the Rangers, well any day the Rangers lose is a good day and Rask is one of my fantasy goalies.
Leafs over the Habs, well someone had to win.
Devils over my Isles makes me sad.
Tampa over the Caps is interesting; nice butt kicking.
Panthers over Carolina; so much for Semin and Jordan Staal lifting the 'Canes so far...
Blues over the Wings... wow. Are the Detroit faithful gonna start calling for a new goalie again? It seems to be their mantra, even more than Vancouver...
Columbus over Nashville in SO... doesn't do anything for me.
Stars over the Coyotes a.k.a. the REAL Jets, yay Lehtonen.
Wild over the Avalanche, I'm ambivalent.
Ducks over Caknuckleheads... snicker... how's that goaltending working out? :p

not going to have comments either negative or positive till after aboutthe fifth game or so.
These teams only had 5 practices, and no exhibition games, and also with canucks they have to
muddle along with replacements till kesler and booth come back, so hopefully they can win a
few in that time, otherwise they will be in tough.

our goalies are fine, both number one, so they will have to work their way in too, get the rust
out, and smooth out.

maybe roberto will leave somewhere along the way, or not, doesn't really matter to me one way or
the other.

edmonton come into vancouver tonight, and many of them have played the whole time, especially those
young guns, so the fans will be entertained by all of their skills, and canucks will have to
figure it out the best they can.

Good attitude, Talloola, I think I'll hang tough for about 10 games before making up my mind if they are going to win the Stanley Cup. LOL

Watched most of Buffalo's win over Philly:

Vanek's five-point day leads the Sabres to season-opening 5-2 win over Flyers - Sabres Edge | The Buffalo News

Had to quit just a bit early in order to watch the NFL playoffs. Great to see Tomas Vanek do so well - he's a former Minnesota Gopher, originally from Austria.

In the three matches that I have seen so far, the reporters have all said the players are playing with great intensity. Interestingly, though there have only been a few fights, I was watching when each was on! Not a big fan of the fights, myself as I hate to see anyone get hurt. but the players can stop it any time they want and they choose not to do so.
