As a Native I've been use to the stereotypes and myths for quite sometime.
Thankfully I know it's only a few uneducated 'white man canadians' that still hang on to them, and am therefore unwilling to paint all 'white man canadians with the same brush.

Just because an individual could opt out, as a matter of cultural genocide, doesn't negate the validity of any treaty.
Many Natives came home from both world wars and signed away their treaty rights for land or an education. While the 'white man canadians' weren't forced to make such concessions for the same benefits.
