Yikes, good thing the teacher found his journal...

A Russell County high school teacher uncovered what is being called a terror plot when she found a misplaced journal in the classroom. Authorities rushed in discovered the beginnings of improvised explosives in the house of Derek Shrout, 17.
Police said he calls himself a white supremacist and he wanted to harm other students.

Classmates said they noticed a change in the suspect's behavior in the weeks leading up to his arrest.

Shrout is claiming his writing was a work of fiction, and his mother has expressed her disbelief that he is is guilty of the charges. The earliest entries in the journal were dated three days after the Sandy Hook massacre in Connecticut.

Sheriff's deputies found over 25 tobacco tins in Derek Shrout's house that they said he was in the process of converting into grenades. Authorities believe he was becoming involved with an organized neo-Nazi group and he learned how to make explosives through internet research.

WTF denial, denial, denial... she might have been the first to go if he followed the Sandy Hook procedure.

Who are these women, what kind of mental state allows this kind of response? And someone at work said to me before Christmas, it's just so unfair that the mothers get blamed...

Yeah sometimes it is...and sometimes, well, sometimes, it isn't.

She's his mother. And maybe that kind of crazy devotion is the only reason he had his guard down enough to forget his cry for help lying around. Who knows.

I'd do everything I could to fight for my kid insofar as I felt he was a salvagable human being. I don't blame her for what he did or was trying to do, but I also don't blame her for sticking by his side. There but for the grace of god, and all that jazz.

And just an added thought.... I don't find anything about a kid having to kill an abusive parent amusing either.

Gotta say I disagree. A public denial...wrong on so many levels; psychologically, emotionally, mentally...it is a reinforcement for bad behavior. That is not love. She need to stfu... she can support him behind closed doors but this just makes her look like a whack job.

I don't read 'expresses disbelief' the same way as you I think.

Okay, it is open to interpretation, perhaps I am looking at it in too black of a way and I guess that may also have been journalistic interpretation and purposely slanted. Have to say though, my first thought was of denial on her part which if true, would be a very, very bad sign. Hopefully you are right. Most of these people though prove to have very very miserable backgrounds. Not all, but a lot.

It's widely open to interpretation the way it's written. All I could think when I read it was 'of course, what mom would act like she'd seen it coming?'

And it could have been as simple as some journalist saying to her... were you aware of any changes in your son's behavior recently where upon even a simple no could be written as a denial...

Actually he may not be charged with anything. He could be writing a work of fiction,
though I doubt the sincerity of that. He could explain the making of explosives to see
if they worked in order to make his book or fiction story real.
What troubles me is will this prove to be an abuse of his ready "Constitutional Right"
we don't know that. If its a work of fiction, he has the right to his story and freedom
of the press. Just like everyone has a right to guns. Can't say we'll respect one right
but no another.

The problem is the law may have not crossed all the t's and dotted the i's before they
took action

Personally I think he's a lying little bugg*r but its not what you know to be true, its about
what you can actually prove.

Big file- Can we have your Readers Digest view on this please.
Well, for one thing, I doubt the dude had a license. The ATF gets cranky about storage, quite a few rules about that. It has a pretty comprehensive list of people it thinks shouldn't have explosives. And here's a whole pile of stuff about homemade explosives. Looks like the ATF gets pretty cranky about that, too: https://www.google.ca/#hl=en&safe=o...58,d.cGE&fp=d3eac2076adaa460&biw=1883&bih=916

All things considered, I think the ATF is gonna jump all over this guy. Unless perhaps DHS gets their mitts on him first.

Hubby used to make pipe bombs with his buddies when they were in highschool.

Thank god they were well adjusted farm kids running what basically amounted to science experiments, and not maladjusts with no outlet in their lives.
