Corporations no full well it is much more efficient to consolidate operations. You can't trade (or shouldn't trade) all stock in every regional stock exchange. It isn't cost efficient.

Emergency response isn't about efficiencies.

Paid enough specifically for disaster relief?

How can they? The government has their hands deep in the pockets of the states as it is. As I said in so many words... when disaster strikes the states say...

"Can we have our money back now? Is it ok?"

Is Pat Robertson still alive? He claimed Katrina was an act of God condemning homosexuals, or something like that. Does the Republican right have any God-fearing theories on this one?

Oh brother. OK Kreskin... there it is I guess.

Geez

It's about temporary solutions to crisis problems.

Personally I have an opinon about situations like this. Expect one and prepare yourself for it. NEVER rely on somebody else.

Well said lad... well said.

Redundencies are on the part of the states. FedEx, an American company (headquarted in Memphis) runs every air-express package it ships through a single sorting facility, even if if it has to be flown 5 states away just to come back to an adjacent state. Consolidated operations save money. a lot of money. Just ask the biggest corporartions.

this is the stuff that Romney knows.

Do you ask insurers for your premiums back when you don't make policy claims?

That's an over simplification. It's easy to say until a tornado has flattened your house and your family is trapped inside. I think there are differences between fast occurring events like earthquakes and slow moving events like hurricanes but there is also differences between wealthy and poor, healthy and infirmed, urban and rural.

Well... again... I guess as JTF suggested (sarcastically) we should abolish states. Amazing how now the states are the redundancy and the feds are the primary. Perhaps "States" have outgrown their usefullness?

I've aleady been hit by a tornado. 1983, you might find our trashed abode in CTV news footage archives.

We never demanded cheeseburgers and VISA gift cards.

Ever heard of insurance? States, counties, towns and cities insure the snot out of their assets for times just like these.

Actually Petros it's been my understand that Governments carry very little insurance (as we know it). They don't insure their vehicles in B.C. as it's cheaper to pay a few claims than to pay all the premiums.

No and good point! Funny we (the insured) have to practically beg for money that we paid in when a claim is filed. Much like insurance companies... the federal govt. has sway over what is needed in a natural disaster and EXPECTS to be praised for giving the money that they were given to them for events like Sandy.

Maybe a little boundary shifting might be in order, like maybe Conn. and R.I. could be combined, same with Md. and Del. On the other hand maybe Calif. should be split. On the other hand maybe it's more hassle and expense than it's worth!

I take it you're not from New Orleans. Cheeseburgers, hotels, booze and strippers! That's the US Govt.! They flew Katrina victims to Cape Cod in Massachusetts and they had them VISAs and they went BONKERS! Booze and strippers! All caught on tape too!

Was anybody trapped in the wreckage?
Yup.

Have you paid attention to what people on the east coast are bitching about? Things they could have taken a care of on their own IF they prepared instead of relying on the Gov and they want they those VISA gift cards to buy cheeseburgers OR ELSE!

It's ****ing disgusting.

You know, the conservatives are a smart lot when it comes to their personal and corporate money. When they do things that aren't in the interest of Americans, but quite resourceful for themselves, they point to the acceptance and benefits of globalization. When Americans want something nationalized for the betterment of more Americans the Cons counter it with the state-run founding fathers argument.

A little off the current topic but...

Eagle, Captain Morgan asked this in another thread, can you answer?

What is the historical background on the animals that the Democrats and Republicans chose as representation... I've seen 'elephants' and 'mules' (?).

If there is an easy (brief) explanation, can you provide it - or otherwise direct me to a link?

Now I know that GOP is Grand Old Party and that they were originally the liberal side but how do the elephant & jacka$$ come to being?
