A normal thicker push pin replacing the "tire iron" style and cut to a shorter length will allow the use of one of those squeeze clasps on the back quite nicely.

One of the problems might be that it is counter productive for people to have a poppy
that they can wear again the next year. They want you to buy a new one next year.

What would be your feelings if a neo-nazi group adopted the fleur de lis as their symbol?

I'd be concerned obviously. But I think the symbol (fleur de lys) is well established enough that its new ''nazi'' interpretation couldn't threaten our traditional Quebecois use of it. I mean, it's on our flag. Basically, I'm sure Quebecers would quickly find a way to clearly resolve any ambiguity.

A lot of French people (from France) find it strange that we use the fleur de lys as a national symbol because to the French (from France) the fleur de lys is reminiscent of France's monarchical past. In other words, it's a symbol they associate with monarchy.

For us Quebecers the fleur de lys has nothing to with monarchy but simply with our national identity. A bit like a star for a US american or the maple leaf for Canadians.

All this shows how the use of symbols is a slippery affair. There's nothing objective about it all and we're all stuck in our individual and collective mindsets but we need to understand that a symbol is fluid concept.

After all the swastika existed before Nazis did.

That being said, what is wrong with a white poppy?

We've had our present poppy's since they arrived at the local legion. On November 11th, we will do as we have done for years. Take the poppy's, replace the pin with the original, pin it to the note of thanks from my family that is attached to the small wreath we place at the local cenotaph.

Next year we'll all get another, and make another donation.

Exactly. I don't think there is a way to make the poppy any cheaper.
It is the sentiment and the donation that counts. For years my whole
family used to watch the Remembrance Day celebrations in Ottawa.
I remember when the ww1 vets numbered in the hundreds and ww2
vets were there in the thousands. Sadly, there are no ww1 vets left
and I don't know if there will be any ww2 vets left this year.

So not all of Canadians express their memory of the past in what you consider an ''appropriate'' Canadian way... Tough life isn't it?

How about fighting for freedom at large and not only Canada?!!!

As if only Canada represented what was fought for in the 20th century major wars. Do you think Quebec doesn't represent those values?

Except the poppy isn't a Canadian symbol, but rather one shared by the entire Commonwealth and some other countries beside. Its not nationalistic, until someone like Marois makes it so.

If Jason Kenney or others are putting a maple leaf or anything else in it, they are equally as wrong. I don't have an issue with something neutral but anything else is directly at odds with what the poppy campaign is about.
