My youngest sister was born extremely premature. She was kept in an incubator, and it wasn't certain whether she would survive or not. She ended up having most of her small intestine removed, but she is still here with us and now happily married. I can't imagine how hard it would have been for my parents to have to go through that ordeal.
Stressed is an understatement....

Dawn came early (27 weeks) with a bowel obstruction. The wife stayed in Toronto for a week - where she went across to Sick Kids every day. Two days after the wife came home, we got the call. The most incredible part of it all was, she stabilized and recovered not long after we got to the hospital to make a difficult choice.

I am glad to hear that your story had a happy ending as well.:)

That is a good point. Perhaps a link to our childhood?

I think we empathize with it, a leftover residual feeling from childhood. It's probably the first time we associate a 'feeling' with a 'thing', which I think we all do to some degree. A treasured childhood memento, an artifact that was passed down from someone we've since lost. It's like a symbolic connection with someone and something that has a deeper meaning. A stuffed toy is a comfort.

Cripe! It was hard enough just keeping my mind on the tasks at hand when our newborn was in neonatal ICU - a hundred miles away....

I saw first hand a family member lose a newborn child. It is not something I'd wish upon my worst enemy. That someone should have to risk losing everything else at the same time is just beyond cruel in my book.
