When I lived in Toronto in the 90s, there was a debate about whether or not Toronto should become "a world class" city.

It seems patently obvious that if you are having that discussion, you clearly are not.

Principles of a World Class City.. that has more or less destroyed Toronto as a livable city.

1. Conformity, congestion.. where size dictates all.. as opposed to a concentration on neighbourhoods.

2.Oppressive and Ugly 'world class' architecture.. producing such white elephants as Skydome and CN Tower and the Bank Towers.

3. Multi-culturalism.. with a healthy dose of political correctness.. that erases cultural memory, moral substructure, distinctiveness and local flavour

4. A mania to get 'world class events' such as the Olympics or G8/20 usually leaving a legacy of debt and unfulfilled promises of benefits.. and world class sports franchises, at outrageous prices.. to lend credibility to world class status.

5. A shift to a service economy.. with the rise of banking at markets at the cost of industry and agriculture, completely destroying the equilibrium of town and country.. and leading to an inundation by highways, suburbs, and 'satellite cities'.. and an ugly urban sprawl.

Is there a "world class" city that has any class?

Berlin is world class. They just won't brag about it because they are afraid of looking like nationalists.

When you can stop and ask for directions from a person sporting a mohawk and massive facial spikes while drinking a beer on the side of the street, that is class. Maybe not the same sort of class as New York or Paris, but that's alright in my books.

lol Personally, I wouldn't live in a city period. I like clean air, clean and untreated water, not having to put up barriers between me and the neighbor (nature did that), not having to have a security system and bars on the windows of my home, etc. I also like not having near 40 degree weather along with the 98% humidity like Toronto, not having to put up with ridiculous traffic congestion, massive housing costs, pitiful little 10 square meter veggie garden, buying food in packages, etc., etc., ad nauseum.
