Doing your part for the environment?

lately, it would appear the current government has been slacking on the responsible use of our limited resources. I was wondering what people here at CC might be doing.

Do you cycle to work, telecommute, car-share, use public transit?

Do you eat more responsibly (from my understanding, animal husbandry takes up more arrable land, and fishing uses more petrol than a vegan-based diet)?

Have you installed solar panels at home, added insulation, do your own gardening to make your own land more productive?

Do you recycle, compost, etc.?

What are we doing here at CC?

I recycle and compost. I can't take public transit, it would make my commute go from 10 min to 1 hr, and I'd have to get my daughter to find her own way home from the sitters, and leave her on her own to get the school bus in the mornings. Not practical for me.

I take public transportation (Subway) but that has nothing to with the environment in my case, it just happens to be the fastest and most efficient way to get to work.

I burn deadfall and roast wienies on the coals.

But subways are bad because Rob Ford wants to build more.

LRT is better.

That chart isn't comparing 'LRTs' to 'Subways', it's comparing one particular subway proposal to one particular LRT proposal. The routes are different lengths, and the ridership numbers are different.

I was just looking at Toronto's situation as a reply to Walter's post.

I cycle to work, eat vegan, have quality insulation at home. In a condo it's difficult to do gardening though, and not much space for solar panels. However, I do wear a sweater indoors in winter (yes, believe it or not, some people still don't wear sweaters indoors!).

Subways aren't "bad." That's terrible and obvious spin by numb nuts.

I was referring to the burning.

Subways aren't bad, Ford just doesn't have a viable way to fund them. The private sector? Ha, ya right.

LRT is better.

Depends on the area of Toronto. Toronto is in dire need of a relief line for the University/Yonge line, before we build anymore subways to Vaughn etc.

How are the cycling paths in Toronto? Durka?

And what about Hummer paths where you live, Walter?

Lots of cycling paths in Toronto. There are paved paths which basically skirt the Don Valley, so one can travel from the lakeshore and north up to about Lawrence, good 15-16km or so. Also paths along most of the lakeshore, Toronto is fairly bike friendly in my opinion.

Is there lots of parking at the local corner store where you live, Walter?
Love the heat so I drive everywhere in AC comfort. I keep the car running while I pop in to get my lotto tickies.
