Seems pretty tame, doesn't it? Bear in mind also that this was a Journalism Education Association/ National Scholastic Press Association conference. Also bear in mind that Savage received a standing ovation at the end of his speech.
Also, it is always appropriate to state that you are attracted to your spouse. Always. Naked, clothed or in swimwear, that is an extremely positive message.
I went to google news and typed Dan Savage. Granted, one news source is just as irreputable as the other, but at least I found a quote instead of paraphrasing.

One never can tell with these journalists. Some people can take notes very quickly mind you, while others have an impeccable memory for quotations. I can type about as fast as a person can talk for instance.
At least the quote I gave has slightly more detail to is then some vague third hand quote about bullsh**.

The writing isn't as polished as the Fox News opinion, but it doesn't deprive the reader of the context for that quote.
Well yeah but, why mention the bible at all? Is the bible the only religious literature that advocates anything related to bullying?
It might be appropriate to state you're attracted to your spouse in certain venues, but what the "H" does that have to do with the stated theme being 'anti bullying'. Most of these attendees I would guess were of an age they would not even have a spouse, nor be caught dead wearing a speedo, so ????
Connecting with your audience is very difficult and if a hundred or so walked out in protest before he got to the parts that ellicited a standing ovation; I'd say he should take a lesson from that.
Because most people here in the west are far more acquainted with the Bible, than they are with other religious texts.

Just finished watching about a 1/2 dozen or so of his video's. In pretty much all of them he is VERY vulgar and definitely not someone that should be speaking in front of a high school audience in that way. Also, it's ALL his opinion. That's it, he has no formal education or training when it comes to his "advice". I would say that his "opinion" is no more valid than any other "layman" and personally find him to be out to lunch on many things.
Indeed. Yet the organizers of the conference asked him to come. He is the writer of an advice column first and foremost. Anybody that knows him would know what they are walking into.

Seems like a fair comment to me: "I get beat up because of some people's beliefs, having hurt nobody, so I complain about those beliefs. But when I complain about those beliefs that caused me to get beat up, people think I am being disrespectful?"
Yup...instead of simply walking out...maybe lobbing some rotten tomatoes would have been more apprpriate:smile:
The audience seemed to think he was big deal. They gave him a standing ovation, after all. The people that walked out just didn't want to hear what was being said. Apparently, they were all for anti-bullying as long as it wasn't anti-gay-bullying.
What a pile of crap. He's as much of a bully as anyone else. His comments concerning Christianity and Bisexuality, while not uncommon from Gay's, shows his bigotry when it comes to those that don't "fit" with his thinking.
Yeah, comparing gay bashing to eating shell fish is the pinnacle of insensitivity. Calling someone pansy-assed for not being able to deal with a person calling one belief bullsh** is totally the same as beating someone up for being gay.
