The little girl seems to lack the instinct of self preservation. Without the glass, she would be a snack and she doesn't even seem to realize it.

I still think zoos are valuable learning tools as well as ways to protect species. There are ways to build zoos better, husband animals better, so that we can reap maximum knowledge.

But, 'animal training' by its nature is a step beyond zoos. I don't care for it one bit. Seaworld would be on my list too.

I think I'd rather see wildlife preserves as opposed to zoos. Life in an enclosure just doesn't seem like a life for a wild animal to have, you know?

No, but, more and more at least they're husbanded animals who've never known different. Preserves are ideal but the need to educate the masses is still there, and they're a little harder for that.

That's a good point. I wouldn't advocate releasing an animal into the wild that was born and raised in captivity, or after generations of captivity. That would be too cruel. But I don't know that I'd put education that far ahead of animal welfare either. Given the option of an animal left to be free in the wild or a captive animal for purposes of education, education which can be obtained by other means so easily now (information is everywhere), I'd have to go with option one.

But I'm not ready to take a P.E.T.A. stand on it, lol. It just seems more cruel to me than not is all.

Educating the masses can now be done using technology. We have the ability to observe creatures in their natural habitats and film them in High Definition. Putting an animal in an environment that is crafted from concrete, fibreglass and steel is not educational. Places like Marineland and Zoo's are from an era gone by and are a form of animal abuse.

Do you feel the same about house pets? Fish tanks? Farm animals?

Not to quibble too much but, marineland is a venue that forces creatures into behaviours, it doesn't deserve to be compared to zoos. And not all zoos are created equal.

Ya! Canadian Content is a very special type of zoo. Behaviours are completely unpredictable.

Not all zoos are created Equal, but neither the Toronto or the Edmonton Zoo had any business housing elephants.

Do I feel the same about house pets? No. My dog has it better than me. He lazes about the house. Gets his belly rubbed all the time and pretty much does as he pleases. The worst thing we did was neuter him and come to think of it after I had my third kid I got neutered too.

Fish tanks? Depends on the fish tank. The ones at the A&P that house 30 trout are pretty cruel.

Farm animals? Again depends on the situation. In places where they completely mistreat the animals I do feel that way. Chickens that undergo live de-beaking are held in cages for laying I consider pretty cruel. Free range animals, not so much.

Then, there are the really cruel ones. A photo from an animal cruelty site on my Facebook has had me avoiding the site until the pic moved from my live feed. I won't even dignify it by posting it here. Why would anyone strap a dog's mouth shut so a high-powered firecracker could do the sort of torture depicted? Some people just don't deserve the honour of sharing air that could be put to better use....

I've never seen that sort of crap even in the worst of zoos.

I do. Our critters come and go as they please. All of them manage to hunt for and find food elsewhere even though we do feed them. But then we have 20 hectares. The difference between a fish bowl and a fish tank can be a few hundred liters; sort of like the diff between a zoo and a reserve. Farm animals as opposed to agribiz animals, same idea.

Thanks. I didn't need that description.
