Is there any difference between Stephen Harper and North Korea’s defunct Dear Leader?

I think the worst part of people like Wente making these comparisons is that it completely spits on the lives of all the people who suffer under brutal dictatorships. It's completely denying and minimizing the truth and reality they experience.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of Harper but this comparison goes way too far and is baseless.

Listen I am not a big fan of Harper but he can hardly be in the same stance as the Dear Leader.
Yes Harper micro manages everything in his grasp but it will also be his undoing. Once a leader
decides his is the dictator in this country he is finished. Mulroney was guilty of that. and of
course we all remember Gordon Campbell, he was a supreme dictator and his team left behind
has no direction and no leadership. I believe Harper has peaked and will begin the long Canadian
decline.
Wait a minute, you know, Gordon Campbell had something in common with Dear Leader.
A few years ago while his people were starving Kim spent ten million on his birthday party.
Well think about it, with a recession looming Gordon Campbell held the Olympics, even though
there was no money for Health or Education, Agriculture, and ensuring that young people had
access to apprenticeship training.
Harper is a pain in the *ss but he is no where near the dictator Kim, the dear leader was.

Yes, thank you. Ditto for the comparison to the Nazi regime. As if anyone in this nation suffers the kind of horrific and systematic abuses that are present under those type of leaders.

I read the article first in the print edition, forgot about it, then again here, after this post, because I kinda like Margret Wente and always thought she was more reasonable than most G&M pundits. So try reading it again, what she seems to be reporting are the opinions of the "enlightened" liberal class of folk who are disgruntled at the fact that the Liberal dictatorial dynasty has been relegated to the dustbin, much like the PC's were for the same reasons. Don't shoot the messenger. I'm not too sure that columnists have that much say in the headlines allotted to their stories either.
