Well there ya have it.

OTTAWA - The federal Liberals have returned to the position they had held for the past several years as the most popular opposition party, a poll released Monday showed.

The federal election in May had reduced the center-left Liberals to a distant third place behind the governing Conservatives and the leftist New Democratic Party, but the Nanos poll now has them edging out the NDP.

Nanos has the Conservatives at 35.6%, down 2.1 points in the past month and compared with 39.6% in the election. The Liberals have shot up 4.7 points in the past month to 28.1%. They won only 18.9 percent in the election.

The New Democrats, who want corporate taxes hiked to pay for more social spending, polled at 27.3% of committed voters, down 2.7 points on the month and compared with 30.6% in the last election.

The Liberals are always a popular "I hate the government" choice between elections. A lot of people when being interrupted from their dinner will rate them favourably to the pollster having only really partially researched the issues. They may not remember the NDP when the soup is overflowing.

As elections draw near people look at the parties and the Liberal support falls off. Also Quebec may have come to realize that the NDP hasn't assumed the proper puckering position around their ass so support for them may have waned somewhat.

Also, right now neither the Liberals or the NDP have any leader in place who will square off with Harper in the next election. And Harper could knock it out of the park or trip over first base yet. Long time between now and the next time we can do anything.

Agreed. Late 2014-early 15 will be when a trend begins one way or the other-or the other.

Given the situation right now Im not too surprised. Bob Rae is far more capable than Nycole Turmel in the house.

So a poll shows the Liberals are above the NDP by what?

A whole 0.8%??

Wow.... and three days later another poll with drop them back down to 3rd place.... then the Bloc will lead, and then the Cons will go down to 3rd place, then the NDP will be 4th place, then 2nd..... then 3rd again.

None of it matters because these polls do nothing except keep the talk going and the people making these polls employed.

Come back to me when it's closer to election time..... there's still plenty of time for all the parties to fk up.

Kudos to them.

Conservatives haven't been able to regain their majority status since the election and have now reached a new low while NDP support remains steady despite having a former Quebec sovereigntist at the helm for four months now.

Have you seen their latest gaffs??? The anti-gun ads???

What a bunch of maroons!!!!!

The intent was "Let's lie to the people, we'll dress up the plain old Mini 14 and make it look bad, so the peasants will support us in our stupidity"

When caught out in their lies, they replace the Mini with the Steyr....w*hich is 4 and 1/2 feet long, weighs 28 lbs, and is a SINGLE SHOT!!!!!!*!! More deception.

Still intending to mislead the people....*...

The National Dimwit Party.....*...Restric*ting your freedom to solve non-existent problems..*

If I really cared that much about gun freedoms (as you apparently do), this might bother me.

I'm no fan of guns either but I agree with Colpy. It was a stupid move. Before they whipped the vote last year over the gun registry a number of NDP MPs were going to vote in favor of getting rid of the gun registry.

Annoying and stupid. They criticized the Conservatives for running election style adds outside of election time and now they're doing the same thing. If things don't improve when a permanent leader is chosen I'll leave the party. Between turning into a quasi-Bloc Quebecois and these moves they're making it hard for me to stick with them.

Giving people a chance to make more money always turns them off.

The question is, which people have a chance to make more money?

If it's farmers, then why is there even a debate?

If it's the corporations, then we're heading in the wrong direction.

This bill gives the farmers in the west the same opportunity that farmers in the east have had since forever.

The funny thing is that if Jack was still alive I don't know that things would be any different. The NDP's rise to opposition was a direct result of the the peoples disgust with the Liberals and also the Bloc. Though I hate to admit it, since Chretien left the party they have had very little leadership. Paul Martin was a resounding disappointment. When he finally got his hand on the stick, the once calculated and confident, Martin became a heap of reactionary Jello who looked panic - stricken through Adscam and desperate during the second election where he lost his minority. Gilles Duceppe, whom I actually like, lost his base in Quebec when he started acting like a Federalist.

The problem is that the NDP doesn't really have a national strategy to move Canada forward and most Canadians know this. The Quebecers who voted NDP did so to send a message, the Canadians who voted NDP did the same. The Liberals made a play, hoping that the G20 stink would get them back into power, but their leader (what was his name again?) had the charisma of Melba Toast. In fact the Liberals suffered because they still hadn't gotten over the arrogance brought forth by Chretien's consecutive majorities. That arrogance led to statements like: We are the Natural Governing Party.

The Liberals will eventually return to power and I think the NDP will suffer staggering losses in the next election, but the Conservatives are here to stay. The fear mongering on the part of the Liberals and the NDP about social issues and the Conservatives is just so much smoke now.

At least for awhile. Canadians will go with the "Devil they know" rather than the one they don't.

Wait till Harper's crowd announce the real price of the F-35s. In Canada, it is very hard
to hide a thirty billion dollar cost over run. The Tories have allready slipped a bit in the latest
polls. They could slip a hell of a lot further.

I still think it's hilarious that a Bob Rae led Liberal caucus had a better shot in the election than an Ignatieff led one.

Margin of error is 3.1%...the only party to have a change in support greater than the error margin was the Liberals. The NDP and Liberals are tied...
