"There are now two sides to Sidney Crosby. There is the player, who was on his way to defining his generation, and what will become of him. And then there is Crosby the symbol. Hockey’s holy wars over concussions and fighting and the game can politicize any event, but the fate of Sidney Crosby is admittedly one hell of an event.

As hockey grapples clumsily with the concussion issue — it has issued halting steps to penalize hits to the head — Mr. Crosby, in January, cautiously endorsed a ban on targeted headshots. Still, NHL supplemental discipline has long treated hits to the head as trifling, even as concussions have ravaged the sport. At some point, players need to be better protected by their league."

Crosby has never been more important to hockey than he is right now | Posted Sports | National Post

I will be watching to see what Sidney has to say about his condition and the chances of him coming back this year. I am really of two minds about him playing again. On the one hand, hockey has been his life from the time he was a toddler - he loves the sport and he's good at what he does. On the other, it would be really appalling should he come back only to suffer yet another concussion. I am glad to see that his team and his doctors are taking his condition seriously. Good luck, Sid..............love your new commercials, especially the one with the kid and his Dad - classic.

I was just listening to team 1040 on my way home, and according to bob McKenenzie, there will be 'no' announcement
from sydney crosby tomorrow, it is 'just' a press conference for the media to 'ask' him about his situation
and 'as the media' does, dig, dig and more digging to find out everything concerning his future plans.

Apparantly after a month of hard practicing, he is still having symptoms, and I assume he will just
continue doing what he has been doing since receiving the concussion.

I love his commercials too, he is very relaxed and real doing them, that one with the kid and his dad,
seems like it is actually happening, and he seems to be sincerely amazed at their reaction to him.

changing subjects if I may:

I was also listening to keven bieksa being interviewed concerning rip rypien. Bieksa was a pallbearer at
his funeral.

They were good friends, played together in manitoba, were called up to the canuck team at the same time, and
rypien lived at bieksa's home as well.

Bieksa said he knew of his problems, and rypien seeked all the help possible to get well, but did not disclose
anything to the media at all, (good for him).
Bieksa said that it bothers him to see how everyone is bunching the three men together, as though they
all had the same problem, and was caused by the same situations, he said that is wrong, and that rypien's
situation was his own, nothing to do with the others at all, and at some future date, he said that mike gillis will speak about ripien and what his individual story was.

more tragic news for the hockey world this morning

43 have been killed in a plane crash in russia, as a hockey team was been transported, to play their

first game this season, and all have perished in the crash.

pavel dimitra, brad McKrimmin and rusilan salai (sp?) were among the dead.

not much else to say, very very sad indeed.

I saw this story and that these guys are all associated with the team, but confirmed as being on board. Regardless, this is a blow to the KHL and the sporting world as a whole.

On a more positive note, with Sid addressing the media in Pittsburgh today (he's been skating there for a bit) hopefuly he will have some good news about his condition.

I certainly hope 'this' isn't the case BUT just heard jason botchford explaining how the plane THEY were

aboard in russia some time ago took off 'overweight', as hockey baggage had to be distributed all over

the passenger area, because there was not enough room in baggage compartment.

I know there has been rumours in the past about russian airflight, as less than efficient, 'I wonder'.

OK, sydney crosby on TV, so I'm gone----

press conference over:

what I appreciated the most is that sydney will be coming back as good as new and it will be sooner than later,

and I also enjoyed the medical information, and the newer approach to treatment and full

recovery of the patient.

With the new NHL head shot rules in place now, I am positive that all of this is moving in the right

direction to lessen the incidence of concussion, but of course it is impossible to remove all of it,

as the game is a highly physical game at high speed, thats just the way it is, there is a risk with

many things people choose to do in life, they take that risk, it is their decision, so be it.

Well said, talloola. I was very interested in what the doctors had to say about how concussions affect a person differently and how there are different types of concussions. After waiting all this time for news on Sid, I am so glad to hear that he will not be back until he and the doctors figure he is completely ready to do so. This young man's life and career are at stake and anything they can do to prevent further harm is, IMHO, what they absolutely have to do.

Further to your comments on Sid's commercials, talloola..........what I have always liked about Sid is that he is always just Sid. There is no artifice in this young man .........what you see is what you get and in an era where instant stardom seems to be the goal of so many who are simply unable to handle the attention with any sense of aplomb, it is refreshing to see someone who is special be so down to earth and approachable.

I get so annoyed with the media, (as always lol), because they continually say, how the hockey players 'must'
be more open and anamated and make their interviews more interesting, and say things that get attention.

WHY i ask, after listening to some football players, who talk into the camera like little children, and basketball players many who are so arrogant, over the years, and the 'odd' hockey player,
avery comes to mind, make asses of themselves, I SO appreciate the typical hockey player, who is polite
humble and will NOT say anything to create scandel or bring attention to himself, keep it up, it is
refreshing and real.

The media would like players to act like dumb jocks. who blurt out dumb things, 'then' they can jump all
over it and make a mountain out of a mole hill, just to get another story.

they can shove their stories 'where the sun don't shine'.

I hear syd might play this week, i'm glad, hope he does well, but on the flip side I will be glad
to 'not' hear about him any longer, unless its about his play on the ice.

mark savard was severly concussed about 2 years ago by matt cooke, a much more severe hit than crosby
took, (I realize that doesn't matter) but as he struggled over the next year to regain his normal
feeling of well being there was hardly a word said about him, once in a while they would make mention,
but nothing like we have been hearing about crosby.

Mark Savard was the best player for boston for a number of years, and now he seems to be finished, as
he just can't regain his good health, I think it was his third concussion.

He missed all of the season and the playoffs last year with his boston team, and also the stanley cup victory, although
he did receive a ring (a special request), he did not lace up his skates once.

So welcome back syd, hope you do well, and good luck to mark savard in whatever you choose to do in
the future.

Mrs T, did you hear Neil McCrae tee off on 'Crosby's little head" when on the day after the Russian plane crash Crosby had a news conference to say there was no news about his head?

I think this is as much about lawyers and insurance companies than it is about his real health.

So Neil is still alive! Haven't heard that name for many years, since I lived on the Island and listened to CKNW. He was head and shoulders the best sportscaster at the time, told it exactly like it was and never pulled any punches.

Ya, he's still on CKNW and as opinionated as ever. His tell-it-like-it-is style hasn't helped him get interviews. 'NW isn't as much of a sports presence as it once was.

no I didn't hear that. I don't listen to NW much at all any more, but McRae is definitely a one of a
kind, a little scratchy, a lot sarcastic, but guess that is his 'gig', sets him apart, and he's still
plugging along.

I do remember the plane crash and the news conference being a day apart, and the big star of the
news conference was the doctor, whom I learned many things from that day about concussions, it was quite
interesting.

But the overkill has definitely been apparant in this situation, and I've never seen a player treated with
such kid gloves in all the years i've watched the game.

It is kind of uncomfortable, just get on with it, either play or don't play, whatever.

Watched edmonton defeat montreal tonight - 3-1 and I'm really enjoying this oilers team,
the kid line is awsome and now that hemsky is back, they have he/horcoff/and smith together,
which makes up a very good line, so the team is deeper now, and playing 'fun to watch' hockey.

In montreal too

I watched milan lucic come down the ice last night and target ryan millar (buffalo goalie), who had
come out into the regular ice area, and he bowled him over very aggressively.

miller now has a concussion

shanahan, NHL decision make for suspension/fines etc., interviewed lucic and decided that after he talked
to him, he concluded that there was no intent at all, so didn't fine or suspend him

I am puzzled, since when does a judge in real life chat with the alleged guilty party, then decide from
what he said that he is innocent or guilty.

OF COURSE LUCIC WOULD SAY EVERYTHING HE CAN TO MAKE HIMSELF LOOK TOTALLY INNOCENT, and shanahan fell
for it hook line and sinker.

teams only have 2 goalies, they should be off limits when it comes to 'real' body checking, lucic had
lots of time to go around him, it was not spontaneous or happen too fast, he had lots of time.
lucic is a huge man, had lots of momentum built up, miller was standing still, it
was a very stupid thing to do.

there are very hard feelings from this, and it isn't completely over, this non move by shanahan has set
up future revenge, I don't like it at all.
it is the responsibility of the nhl to settle these things fairly, it wasn't.
