This more properly belongs in "politics" but it wouldn't take it. I just listened to Paul Martin speaking on C.B.C. radio and he says the biggest social and economic problem in Canada is the deplorable state of aboriginal education, it is not being addressed and it is under funded. On THIS I agree with Mr. Martin. There is so much potential talent and intelligence out there that is being wasted. How best to go about improving this situation? Is it due mainly to the attitude of non aboriginal Canadians? My opinion of Mr. Martin just jumped a couple of notches.

Re: ‘Education systems should not be used to assimilate,’ says Kahnawake diplomat

As he is a representative of what he considers to be a sovereign nation, he is defending their belief on sovereignty. No more, no less than that.

While I support Kenneth Deers assertion that education is paramount to young aboriginal people, I do have a question.

Who pays for APTN?

all moneys ultimately comes out of federal coffers.

I will add this though, it is all owed to them for as long as "the sun shines and the rivers flow".

There is another thread regarding this topic. Perhaps the mods could merge the two.

Mr. Martin talks a good game, but his government served over a decade and did little to advance this issue. The great thing about opposition politics, even when you are no longer the leader is that you can run your mouth all you want and promise the moon, but you don't have to deliver.

Well I'd say that the Feds are doing quite a few things for the aboriginal people. I'd also say that the aboriginal leaders need to do more to vet corruption in self government and use the public dollars they are given to the betterment of their people.

From what I recall the only budget not cut during the Chretien/Martin cut years was for aboriginals

Not cutting. That's kind of like clearing treaties, making formal apologies, eradicating drug abuse, purifying water. Yeah the Liberals did a lot. :)

That's right, can't be giving the Libs credit for anything.

That is not how I read it - The system is broken, disease, health, gangs, addiction, and on and on. How could any sane person find places to cut funds for Aboriginals.

Okay. They didn't cut! Hooray for them!

Martin F'd all of the Provinces, Chretien never got rid of the GST, yet denied he ever said he would.

They killed the baby bonus, killed Canadian soldiers with their military cuts, sold what was left our soul to China, but hey.. Far be it for me to forget what Heroes they were for not cutting the money they already were paying out to the aboriginals. Which by the way was not solving the problem anyway.

Hows that for giving credit?

Have you been following Saskatchewan politics on this topic, or is it the same
Canada wide?

Love the reaction of some when they are caught in a lie. Just can't admit they were wrong about something.

Not a lie - fact as well - the budget was balanced in 96 or 97 - Yet they kept on cutting. Yes Soldiers died from Bosnia to Afghanistan - why - ****ty equipment. We could not move supplies the way other countries did - they used choppers - we used roads and more dead Soldiers.

yes, I agree, maybe mr martin can 'recall' of those sponsorship funds, to pay for aboriginal education, should
be lots left over I would think.

he and cretian should be in jail, along with their 'pals'.
