American forces should not be used for any purpose other than defense of the lives and interests of Americans. If Obama uses force in Libya for humanitarian purposes any American deaths or injuries will be blamed on him. I suspect that threat in and of itself is enough to deter Obama.
Judging from the level of demonizing anti-Gaddafi propaganda and increased military presence in the area, NATO is considering a "humanitarian" intervention.

So far, the case for intervening to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe is weak. Current death toll estimates range from hundreds (similar to Egypt) to a few thousand. I see no proof of a major humanitarian catastrophe... so far. The Libyan air force appears to have only bombed military targets, not unarmed civilians despite news reports to the contrary... The worst confirmed atrocity in this conflict so far was Gaddafi's use of mercenaries to shoot at crowds of unarmed protesters.

The situation in Libya has the potential to become a humanitarian catastrophe. Therefore the UNSC should be prepared to authorize military intervention.

NATO should have a plan in place now, to act if the situation turns into a humanitarian catastrophe.

If NATO has no intention of intervening and instead plans to watch a Rwandan scale crisis unfold from the sidelines, then they should say so now and yield to other UNSC members who might be interested in developing a plan to restore order in Libya.

It doesn't matter what happens in Libya. America has nothing to gain by being involved anywhere in the eastern hemisphere. America's business is at home.

They will have to do something. The last thing the US wants is to deal with a free nation.

Nice picture of Obama.

Israel provides henchmen for Gaddafi

Israeli arms distribution company Global CST has reportedly, under the authorization of Tel Aviv, provided Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi with African mercenaries to clamp down on anti-government protesters.
Egyptian sources have revealed that the Israeli company has so far provided Gaddafi’s regime with 50,000 African mercenaries to attack the civilian anti-government protesters in Libya.
The arms company was previously convicted in an African country over illegal deals, News-Israel website reported.
Sources say Global CST had obtained the permission for providing the mercenaries to Gaddafi from the Israeli officials

I listened to Robert Gates - the US Defense Secretary - with great interest yesterday. I was taken by his tone and his ability to put his point against quick intervention so succinctly. It was refreshing to listen to a Defense Secretary who was not afraid to state things plainly for the Amercian people. His remarks gave me hope that cooler heads would prevail in this matter which in all reality is not an issue the US needs to involve themselves in if for no other reason than the fact that it would further inflame anti-US passions in the Middle East. The establishment of a no-fly zone is an attack on Libya - one doesn't simply say okay guys no more flying - people will die, possibly on both sides - that then is war.

The price of freedom often comes with bloodshed but those so harmed must have a personal stake in the outcome of the conflict. This is a Libyan matter and it should be settled by Libyans themselves.

If you think DB is wrong, then prove it. I have no idea whether his claim is true or not. Attacking him for sharing information isn't debate and against forum rules.

I found the source of DB's claims: The Tehran Times. Doesn't mean its false, just that the source is questionable:
tehran times : Israel provides henchmen for Gaddafi

CST Global of Israel does offer mercenaries for hire. Many dictators use the services of CST when seeking mercenaries. Therefore the claim is plausible. CST Global activities must be approved by the Israeli government:
Business & Human Rights : Global CST

CST Global provides "security" services. Here is an example of some of their known activities:

The right wingers didn't want Clinton to intervene in Yugoslavia but appear to be enthused about having the USA intervene in Libya. Can somebody explain why?

Then stop using so much oil?

Running around the world like imperialist isn't the only answer you know.

Actually I agree. There are plenty of resources in North America. They merely need to be developed. Conservation, nuclear, oil, natural gas, renewables, alternatives, coal, tar sands, the full nine yards. Pursue all sources of energy at the same time.

Europe and East Asia should be on their own. Freedom of navigation isn't America's problem. With willing and voluntary partners like Canada and Mexico, there is no need to get involved in the eastern hemisphere.

Very impressive post, but that would be like Israel supporting Iran. Where and how did these mythical 50,000 come from, more importantly how did they get into Libya?
Apparently, the report is a typical anti Zionist anti Israel fabrication.

GORDON DUFF: ISRAEL INTERVENES IN LIBYA…FOR GADDAFI!

March 3, 2011 posted by Gordon Duff · GORDON DUFF: ISRAEL INTERVENES IN LIBYA…FOR GADDAFI! : Veterans Today

MARINES ON THE USS KEARSARGE AWAIT ORDERS

50,000 MERCENARIES TO BE DEPLOYED AGAINST REBELS

Al Qaeda Fighters Included in Israeli Force

By Gordon Duff STAFF WRITER/Senior Editor
In a move that surprises all but Middle East experts, Israel has promised Libya’s dictator of over 40 years, Colonel Gaddafi, 50,000 troops to aid in crushing rebels set on overthrowing his his murderous rule. According to news sources inside Israel, “troops” are being hired across Africa, Uganda, Sudan, Chad and the Central Africa Republic, including Al Qaeda fighters, to be deployed against demonstrators and rebel forces currently involved in heavy fighting in a two week old attempt to overthrow the Libyan ruler that has left thousands dead.
In the last 72 hours, rebel leaders have been in contact with Britain and the United States, nations that have promised aid and have positioned forces in the Mediterranean for a decisive strike against Gaddafi. Additional US Marines have been sent to reinforce assault teams on the USS Kearsarge, a helicopter assault ship now stationed off Tripoli awaiting orders to begin operations.

Why should NATO get involved or have a plan to put forces down in Libya? A Lybian Civil War has nothing to do with NATO.

I do not see NATO standing in the way of any UNSC force.

I can just see Israel using 50 thousand mercenaries to support any operation against the U.S. There is just no logic to it. As for the U.S. and NATO butting into a Libyan civil war that is stupid. (I know we all have done stupid things before) I do not believe that good cop, bad cop reply is a valid response either.

From your source:
"Ron Paul 2012 says:
March 3, 2011 at 12:36 pm
This is what I think is going on.
Israel is playing bad cop while the USA is playing good cop.
If Gaddafi can start doing serious damage to the rebels NATO, will have an excuse to execute a military invasion.
At that point we are doing what we do best, control both sides of the conflict.
This is right out of the imperialist playbook."

400 Marines does not an invasion force make.

Judging from the level of demonizing anti-Gaddafi propaganda and increased military presence in the area, NATO is considering a "humanitarian" intervention.

Why? Which side do we support, I am sure there are non-combatants on both sides. We support and help the rebels win, the government supporters will hate us. We support the government the rebels will hate us. Either way it is not good. Just sit back and make sure the killings don't get to bad. We can always pick up the pieces later. Don't be to quick to get more killed. It will not be like Rwanda. I am sure NATO has a plan, they just haven't informed you yet.

Todays news. notice the wording the media uses and some think they are getting the real story.

"Moammar Gadhafi's forces launched a powerful attack trying to take back the closest opposition-held city to the Libyan capital on Friday, in fierce fighting that killed at least 18, including the city's top rebel commander loyalists fired tear gas and live ammunition to smother a new outbreak of protests."

True meaning:

"Moammar Gadhafi's forces launched a powerful attack trying to take back the closest opposition-held city to the Libyan capital on Friday, in fierce fighting that killed at least 18, including the city's top rebel commander loyalists fired tear gas and live ammunition to smother a rebel counter attack."

There is no massacres going on, just two armies shooting at each other and for whatever reason the media one side to win. They have been controlling wars for years.
