3 fist sized meals a day? roflmao So it makes no difference whether these meals are made of pure lard or spinach? That's freakin hilarious.
cfl is on the right track, although a bit extreme, IMO. I see nothing wrong with having the odd burger, chunk of pie, or bag of cheesies as long as you keep track of your caloric intake. Eat a big fat steak with a stack of spuds and cauliflower or something if you like or even a salami sausage. Once in a while it doesn't hurt. But count the calories and increase the exercise to compensate for the extra ones. And try not to have too many occasional bites of processed foods. :D
It's not brain surgery. There's no mystical secret.

that's exactly what I do anna, I eat good healthy foods, most of the time, but we like our goodies,
and a burger now and then, so I always balance off what I have eaten each day, 'by calories', approx.
so that I can be sure I'm not having a burger and also something else high in calories the same day,
it's really easy, and one can eat those little sinful things once in a while, even once a week.
What we don't do is 'snack' in between meals, we like our food, so when we do eat a meal, we are hungry,
and have room to eat it, and not pile it on some snack we might have had two hours ago.
We also eat our 'big' meal of the day around 2 oclock in the afternoon, and not late in the day,
especially after 6 oclock or so, so when we go to bed, we aren't laying there with our tummys full of
food, just a small snack around 8 oclock, nothing filling.

And, it is important to stay active, at my age I don't have to do so much excercise that I am laying
around in a pool of sweat, but walking is so good for you, and 'just' being on your feet, busy and
active, especially after meals.

I know it is difficult for 'heavy' people to get out there in public and excercise,
walk etc., but I see them often, and I commend them for putting out the effort,
and being conscience that their bodies need trimming, and their health is important.

Definitely.
Some people are like me, though, and I know about a half dozen or so of them. They have a pretty tough time maintaining a weight.
It took me over 3 months to gain back 12 pounds I had lost due to illness. lol I eat throughout the day, too, but when I snack it is more likely to be a carrot or a celery stick than a choclate bar or bag of cheesies. Not a big fan of pop except for a root beer once every 2 or 3 months.
Hubby gains a little weight now and then but stays pretty much around 115 to 120 kg. His weight doesn't oscillate much, though, because when he burns fat off he gains muscle.

It's about how much your body thinks your stomach needs.

If you are eating pounds of salads even though your body drops it in the throne the next morning your body will demand the same volume of food before the hunger pangs disappear.

The secret is to eat smaller amounts of your normal food and trick your body so the hunger pangs will go away sooner so you feel fuller sooner.

That's why the diet industry is a multi-billion dollar industry because they know full well that people will go back to eating their regular food and eat more than they did before.

Eating the same volume as your fist will save you.

When you go to a restaurant take a doggy bag since they are charging a lot for the food by giving your triple portions.

When I go to the fast food joints I order from the kiddy menu because that's what the average portion was when I was twenty and and the obese problem was non-existent.

and unless Les is over 7 feet tall.... he would be considered over weight. If he is less than6 feet tall her is considered obese.

I know that my weight of 199 ( which I had been sitting at for over 20 years) is considered obese considering my hight.

Generally speaking you'd be right, but there's a couple of things to keep in mind, both bone and muscle weigh a lot more than fat- weight is only one factor of obesity. A fat person can start getting in shape and replace some fat with muscle and although his girth will shrink, his weight may not. Big boned people can weigh more without being fat.

By those who are going by the antiquated weight vs. height charts instead of the newer methods of measuring, I agree.

I know that my weight of 199 ( which I had been sitting at for over 20 years) is considered obese considering my hight.
However, standards of fitness and body fat measurements these days have gone a little past that. Les's percentage of body fat is about 17%. Mine's about 18%. He's fit, I am athletic according to the people that test this kind of stuff at the local clinic.
Fat is lighter than muscle and muscle is more dense in cellular structure than fat, too.

follow the Canada food guide, as easy as that. 3 meals with 3 snacks per day. That means you eat 6 times per day. This is to keep your metabolism running at full bore so that your body doesn't think your starving and start storing fat.

As for fruit juices, they all pretty much have too much sugar. It is recommended that you get your fruit intake from whole fruit and your liquid intake from water.

yes, I agree, but one shouldn't just drink water, it is good to replace water sometimes with a gator-ade
type drink, but should not drink too much of that either.

Long distance runners can become very ill if they only drink water while running, (marathons etc.,), as
the body needs to replace the salts (electrolytes), so the sport drinks are helpful in small doses.
Yes, people who go long periods between meals, and think they are doing themselves a
favour, just don't get it, small meals, more times a day is better.

.
Which is, of course, the whole point to them; they were developed for football players in Florida.

I run a lot. I can't stand those sports drinks. Too sweet. I make lemonade and carry a bottle with me.

I've been on a yeast free sort of diet for some time, now. I got to a point where I gained a few pounds, lost it, but my gut just kept getting bigger!!?? I also had some other digestive issues, but we'll save those details (I think I requested help here onteh forums once!) So, after talking to a new doctor, discussing some past health issues, family medical history and past medications, she recommend the diet along with a b6 supplement and a b12 shot. I lost 15 pounds, but it looks like 30 and most if came off the middle and stayed off. I'm not super strict about it now, just avoid sugar, dairy and bread and pasta - seem to be the worst offenders. I take my vitamins religiously as well as my monthly shots! I also tested positive for pernicous anemia which was causing all kinds of grief for most of my life!

Yeah, but people are made to feel that they shouldn't be out in public if they're overweight, let alone out exercising in it for everyone to mock them. If anyone had any idea how hard it is to subject yourself to that kind of attitude.
I think that because we live in a world of so many overweight people now that rather than mocking, people are changing their attitude to "good for her/him" when they see those (us/me) people out walking or running now. The road in front of my house seems to be a regular "gym" for people walking and running. Lots of overweight people amongst the rest.
JLM I not avoiding exercing but most days my day is pretty full. I have to make sure I get up and go to it first thing in the morning or it doesn't get done. Our household is still crazy and who knows when things will change. Once school gets out I will have 5 kids from Monday through Wednesday from 8:00 A.M. on until after dinner and then likely 3 kids for part of Thurs. and I think Friday is mostly taken up by my daughter-in-law. Maybe the mother will take the kids from morning until 7:00 PM on Thurs. but so far, she doesn't seem too interested. Those are actually good incentive days because if I take all 5 for a walk it's something to do in the day. Not too much uphill pushing the wheel chair though! It gets very heavy.

really VI, I see the attitude shifting the other way... people are getting ruder and ruder about overweight people. They are the newest health scourge... there are no longer enough smokers around to heap scorn on I guess. Instead people harp abuot fat people and how they should 'just' do this or that. So simple. it's right up there with the solution to alcoholism... stop drinking. Easy peasy! :)

I mentioned this before in another thread and I'll mention it here. This is what I have been doing since February and it works. It is a vigorous training and diet program that is hard but everyone can do it so long as you have the time to dedicate. It is a muscle confusion and diet program.

It is 6 days a week and 1 to 1.15 hours on the work out days and one day off. You do the program in front of your TV. Now many will roll their eyes at that... I did too. I loved going to the gym but we all know that story...sometimes you just don't make it to the gym. Dumbells, a chin up bar, and a mat...thats it! That's all you need. I am older and I have not seen my six pack since my 20's... I have a six pack again.

So yup... Americans are overweight for the most part...but not me!

My Canadian freinds...you can do this too! CanCon members can be the best and brightest AND have the best bods!

That's sad. For some reason, Nanaimo seems to be such an "exercise" city. So many people here run. I've lived in 3 different houses here since 2002 and everytime I seem to hit an area with more "runners" than I have ever seen anywhere. I see groups going by. Some are doing the full run. Some are doing the walk/run and others are walking fast with their strollers in front of them. They seem to belong to a group but I know there are a lot of running groups here because my daughter-in-law joined one just to get herself a good start. She likes the idea of partnering up and I like it that she does too. She runs between their house and ours and she carries her cell but I still like it that she runs with someone. She's out at 7:00 A.M. or earlier.

Eagle's spamming aside, with the scenery we have around here, exercising in front of a tv would be depressing to me. Going to a gym would have the same effect. Might as well buy a Bowflex or something.

My oldest son is using that but I know he's not doing the required exercise. He goes for a run before the kids wake up though so I guess he's doing something. He's losing lots of weight. Almost everytime he comes through the door he's so proud that he fits back (or simply fits into) into clothes that once fit. Street shorts especially since it's that time of the year. He's looking pretty good as is our other son who is doing Biggest Losers.
