Like I said before, BC gov't put a cap on how much landlords could raise rents and it worked. Rental places didn't disappear.
I don't think it is an either/or issue. let the prices of the stuff rise but put a cap on how much it can rise.
Tobacco I'd just outright ban except for medical purposes. Booze, I'd just keep raising taxes and add heavier fines for bootleggers.

I think the market place should establish most prices and Gov't. should keep its nose out of it. Let people use their brain and when they feel they've been ripped off enough they will quit buying...................unless they are idiots.:lol::lol::lol:

Great! A country full of Zeller's, Canuck Tires, and Walmarts. That's enough to turn a lotta people off consumerism

Those places serve a good purpose, why pay more if you are buying paper clips or address books? If you are buying crown jewels you don't shop there. Eatons, W.W. and the BAy had better quality, but at a much higher price and how much quality do you want when you are buying sneakers or rubber boots for kids? My wife just bought a good T.V. from Walmart, the cheapest in town but it works the same as any other T.V. (it's an Emerson)

I'm fussy, that's why. I get pet food & soaps there and that's about it. Most of the stuff those places sell do not carry local goods. I prefer to support my neighborhood, not some other place.

You're fooling yourself, those places employ local people are serviced by local power, telephone, use local janitors and mainly sell stuff made in Hong Kong, Korea or the Phillipines or Mexico like every other merchant in town. You don't believe Joe's Camera shop gets his Kodak Cameras from a different source than Zellers do you?

I'm not fooling myself. There's a few locals that use the shops in town to market their wares. Look at the stuff in Walmart and you see it comes from the USA, China, Korea, etc. Like I said, I prefer to support my neighbors.

Sure I'll go to Sam the local iron monger to buy a hoe if he can produce a hoe of equal quality at equal price. I have no problem with that. I used to patronize the fruit stands a lot until I found out their prices were higher than Safeway and the quality wasn't any better.

Here's one for you Anna. Safeway in Vernon carries two brands of milk. Lucerne and Dairyland. A two litre of Lucerne is about 80 cents cheaper (has been for months) than a two litre of Dairyland. I asked the cashier the other day if they sell much Dairyland milk. She said they did as a lot of people like to support the local producer. Dairyland's H.Q. is in Vancouver, Lucerne's is in Winnipeg, so I say P*ss on the local producer, if the other outfit can ship it four times as far for 80% of the price I say they deserve the business, not the local A$$holes who are ripping us off. Excuse my language (I'm not usually like that) LOL

*shrugs* Suit yourself. Our local economy has an effect on us so we like to have an effect on it. So far it's been mutually beneficial.
If you want DL milk, go to Walmart for it. The one here carries DL. BTW, Dairyland is owned by Saputo, which is based in Quebec.

That's just it unless you dig really deep you don't really know who owns anything, unless it's Joe your neighbour selling moonshine out of his garage. I agree wholeheartedly with supporting the local economy (did it in Grand Forks for years) AS LONG AS they produce similar quality for similar price.
