With the auto bailouts in Canada and the States, it is not surprising that those wishing to resurrect the primacy of the Big Three are trumpeting Toyota's problems. It seems that the consumer is being manipulated ...

That is something I wondered about as well. Ford noticed a jump in their sales as soon as the recall was announced. Now the government has ordered a probe into the Prius brakes. No doubt that will help Ford as well. This whole situation is beginning to smell including the note below:

Some owners of the 2010 Prius have reported their brakes do not always engage immediately when they press the brake pedal, or that the brakes have an inconsistent feel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it would assess the scope of the problem and the safety risk to about 37,000 cars that could be affected.

I have absolutely nothing against Toyotas (or Hondas or Hyundais) but knowing what I know now about Vibes, I think out of loyalty to the domestic markets, they should also be given serious consideration. I think it's to our benefit to see G.M. (and Chrysler and Ford) succeed.

Maybe a form of protectionism, but why? Ford stock has been going up all along before this all happened. Toyota is made in the U.S. now. Try the Sienna, it hasn't made the recall list yet.

Actually the Vibe is built by Toyota in California, and is the same vehicle as the Toyota Matrix. It will fall under this recall as well.

Last March I bought a 2005 Pontiac Vibe with 30000 km on it. An excellent little car- 4 cylinder engine, easy on gas, since I bought it I serviced it once and that's all I've had to do. I also know 2 other people with Vibes and they are very happy with theirs. Highly recommend you check one out.

You realize that's covered by the same recall, right?

A lot of people bought the Vibe, because it is a Toyota Matrix, but because of the Pontiac name, you can usually buy it cheaper than an equivalent Matrix.

You get the best of both worlds - Toyota quality (yeah, I know....) and low GM price.

No, Vibe is NOT on the list, I checked.

That is because the recall would come from GM, not Toyota.

From the Huffington Post:

The 2010 Toyota recall models list affects more than two million vehicles.
Here are the models affected by the Toyota recall:
• 2009-2010 RAV4,
• 2009-2010 Corolla,
• 2009-2010 Matrix,
• 2005-2010 Avalon,
• 2007-2010 Camry,
• 2010 Highlander,
• 2007-2010 Tundra,
• 2008-2010 Sequoia
GM recalled the Pontiac Vibe, which is similar to the Toyota Matrix, days later.

Thanks Risus- Looks like 2005 models are safe, thanks.

It has come to a choice between the Subaru Outback and the Toyota RAV4.
Another $.0.2 worth here (what am I up to now, 6 cents?): Phil Edmonston's 2010 Lemon Aid guide rates the RAV4 as the better vehicle, for what to me would be crucial reasons. He says:
1. The Outback's base 2.5 litre engine is sluggish, anything bigger is a gas hog and the V6 needs premium fuel.
2. it's complex to repair, parts are hard to find and expensive, you're bound to the dealer.
3. it handles poorly in a crosswind.
4. stay away from the original-equipment Firestone and Bridgestone tires.

Any one of those to me would be damning, especially #2.

2. it's complex to repair, parts are hard to find and expensive, you're bound to the dealer. That is not a problem in the lower mainland of B.C.
3. it handles poorly in a crosswind. I don't know how strong a crosswind they were talking about but I never noticed any problem.
4. stay away from the original-equipment Firestone and Bridgestone tires. I've used Bridgestone tires for years and I would recommend them to anyone.

Any one of those to me would be damning, especially #2.

Hey. My wife likes how she sits a bit higher in the RAV4 so I think that is the way we are going so... As I said, "I would accept either". Too bad used MGs are so expensive..;-);-)

Spoken like a true car nut. The MG is hopelessly impractical, over-priced, unreliable... but I'd like one too. Visualize Mr. Sinister in an MG, zipping along with his white silk scarf waving in the breeze, cloth cap on his head, a pipe clenched in his teeth, skillfully shifting and double clutching and passing everybody in sight... Like I said in the gerryh birthday thread, everybody's an asshole sometimes.;-)

My wife and I are currently pondering over which car to buy to replace an aging Toyota. I have absolutely no qualms about buying another Toyota. If there is a problem, I'm sure Toyota will fix it. We're not replacing the car because it doesn't run. It runs fine. We are replacing the car because we want the features the new car has. It has come to a choice between the Subaru Outback and the Toyota RAV4. My wife is pushing for the RAV4. My preference has been for the Subaru but I would take either.

Hi Juan, if I may add, it looks like the rav4 has a batter proven cage integrity because of it's shape.
But, the Rav looks like it may be a little restrictive in identifying your perimeters during parking especially for a short driver, again because of its shape.

The outback looks like it has a better 360d friendly visibility (no hidden spots), but I am not sure what the cage integrity on the Subaru out back today is.

Sorry about this stupid complaint that popped up on the last image, I had picked up a photo of a 2010 Subaru outback, I was in a hurry and post it with out checking if it posted correctly.

They trick me, as well my fault for not checking before I logged off.

This is the picture I intended to post.

Don't forget a heater that works.

Yes, a heater that works would be good. MGs, Austin Healeys, Triumphs, and all British sports cars were designed for sunny weather and they were great in sunny weather. To paraphrase Dexter, you'd think a car designed in Britain would be better in the wet. It is a real experience to get caught in the rain and having to build the top from assorted parts in the trunk while the water runs off your nose, and everything else.

I won't even get into the Lucas electrical system.
