Not only blacks, but even Hispanics regard you people as racists, that is why they vote for Democrats in such large proportion (though perhaps not as lop sided as blacks). How did the vicious, vitriolic trashing, attempts at personal destruction of Sottomoyer work for your party in improving its relations with Hispanics?

YJ, there is one big difference between Bork and Sottomoyer. Whatever trashing that Democrats did (and it was a hatchet job), it was not racist, there were no racial overtones to it.

The attack on Sottomoyer on the other hand, was perceived by Hispanics as racially motivated. Republicans already had strained relationship with Hispanics, the unprovoked attacks on Sottomoyer made it much worse.

To be fair it was not the Congressional Republicans, they were fairly muted in their attacks on her. As the opposition party, they are expected to oppose her nomination, that was as it should have been. I don’t think the conduct of Congressional Republicans was blameworthy.

However, the vicious, vitriolic attack by the far right, by the talk radio, the attempts at personal destruction were disgusting and revolting. That made the relations between GOP and Hispanics much worse.

As I was discussing with Avro yesterday, Bush got 44% of Hispanic vote in 2004, and that was considered a stellar performance, a very good performance. Around 35% is the normal share of Republicans (that is what Bush got in 2000).

Again, the attack on Thomas was not racially motivated, his accuser, Anita Hill herself was black. So there really was no element of racism in it.

Whenever there is a Supreme court nominee, the side that does not like his politics is going to mount a strong attack on him/her, that is to be expected. It becomes particularly odious when there is an element of racism in it, real or perceived. In the case of Sottomoyer, there was such an element, in the case of Clarence Thomas, there wasn’t. His accuser was also black.
