Where is the moderator at CC to suspend idiots who and add moronic comments and pictures? Does this board have one?

Ron, I don't think dump's problem is nesasarily with the pics themselves, but with the fact that he doesn't feel they bring anyhing to the discussion and tend to move it off topic.

Well, to "sort of" bring this back on topic, I don't think that this:

pics deleted

.....where the issue, but just in case:

If I've offended any Farmers, Ranchers, Cows, Animal Activists,
Camel Jockeys, Jockeys, Short People (?), Camels, or those that
may have been traumatized by the mental image that I might have
worn the ol' tighty-whities at some point in my life.....I apologize.

BC would be dead in the water without it right now.
Why? We are so far in debt because of it and medical services are taking a big hit because of it. When it's all over, we'll just be further in debt. Have you walked down by the seashore lately? Even the ferries are dead in the water. Ferries schedules being cut because of a lack of ridership (no one can afford to ride the ferry anymore). I think we'll soon become a country in our own right over here since we don't have many options about getting to the mainland. Our mayor is trying to garner support for the ferry schedule to continue as it was. Are they making any waves (pun intended) in your town.

Hi VI: I dissagree. The olympics are good for the economy as well as showcaseing our province. Even the Island will bring in significant amounts of booty. Several teams are using Mt. Washington for practicing and some of them will be touring around. Good for business in a slow time especially for the airlines and B.C. Ferries.
Then why are they cutting the number of sailings?

I got to wondering about that, it seems a fairly obvious thing for some economics graduate student to attempt a cost/benefit analysis on as a thesis topic, so I googled "Olympics benefits" and found such a thing, from a Master's student at Queen's named Darren McHugh. He took a close look and concluded, after about 60 pages of analysis and discussion, "...the expected overall net benefit of hosting an Olympic Games is substantially negative." Economic-speak for "it's a loser."

I'm by no means well versed on macroeconomics, or cost-benefits analyses, but something about that study doesn't seem quite right to me.

At the end of the introduction, they contrasted the methods that advocates of Olympics tend to use with the one they choose, ie. Provincial/regional versus National.

To me, it seems a bit tilted to do a cost benefits analysis of the Olympic games in British Columbia, and use a National perspective. The benefits are surely going to drop off the further one gets from BC. For instance I would imagine that the opportunity to get contracts or employment would be easiest in BC, and easier for Alberta companies/labour than it is for those in Nova Scotia.

A second point is that a cost-benefits analysis whose scope is "the act of inviting world-class athletes, television crews, and tourists to your city for two weeks to compete" would seem to me to miss the point a bit.

In the economics classes I have taken, it's standard for large capital expenses to be portioned so that those costs are spread evenly over the useful life of the asset. The facilities which are built for these games can be used long after the two week period for the Olympics ends, and after the Paralympic games. They can be used in all sorts of World Cup events in the myriad of winter sports, which themselves bring added benefits to the city or region.

Those would be two points that to me seem unreasonable.

And very little if any of the benefit gets spread around outside the lower mainland. And if there is any benefit outside the lower mainland it'll take years to realize. In the meantime we pay taxes so the rich from around the world and the local yokels around the LM can see a couple weeks of people playing. woot woot

depends who 'them' is.

some folks, it's tempting... others, I'd rather just hug 'em to death. :p
You get that, too, huh? Good. Sometimes I think, "the heck with it" and imagine a hug for everyone, whether they are a§§es or not. lol Some would get the extended hugs, though and a couple would be reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaally short. lol

.... and why the cuts in education, healthcare, seniors programs, community programs, etc. for the entire province as well as fudging the budget a bit? Hansen's figures in February predicted a #1 to 2 billion deficit and the experts came back with figures from $1.75 to 2.25 billion.

When Vancouver does well, BC does well. The growth of the interior and island has been fueled by Vancouver real estate. What happens in Vancouver matters a lot to most of us. The spin offs will last for years, as Paul mentioned, and it comes with infrastructure, not just debt. The torch relay starts within a couple of weeks. I know it comes through Campbell River on November 2. I can't wait to see BC advertised to the world. My feeling is, it's not going away so why not celebrate and take some pride in this. No amount of complaining will lower the cost or make it disappear. Turn the frown upside down and see the glass half full.
