In the bush near Sudbury
Once upon a time, I was a "buy domestic" man. I supported friends and neighbours in owning their products - and paying the endless cost of parts. My first "Jap scrap" was a '77 Datsun 310 - bought used and cheap to get me through a return to college when driving trucks started to hurt. Since then, I've had better service from 2 Nissans, a Mazda and today's Toyota that I ever got from babying a Chevy. The old pick-up has its own fond spot - but the Toyota is the daily driver.

"You sound just like Charles Emerson Winchester the 3rd from MASH when he was talking about Klinger behind his back."

I stopped watching M*A*S*H after it became clear that it was nothing more than a pathetic political platform for the bleeding-heart Left.

So, I have no idea what you are talking about.

We know a plastic surgeon, he is filthy rich. Most plastic surgeons do a lot of non OHIP work, and can charge at much higher rates than OHIP rates, so plastic surgeons tend to be among the richest doctors.

Anyway, he has an antique Cobra, it cost him 500,000 dollars. That is not the car you can drive every day, he takes it out once in a while.

He brought it to a party. When the party broke up and he tried to start his car, it wouldn’t start, the battery had run down. He had to get a boost from the host’s lowly SUV. He got a lot of good natured ribbing for that.
If the fool is too lazy to keep up the maintenance on it, he shouldn't have it. By far, most people that own antiques and classics baby their toys. I was like that with my GTX racecar to a point.

Oh well. Your loss. :) C E Winchester the 3rd was from Boston. You might say he was an upper-class Archie Bunker with a superiority complex. lol No offense, Jack, but the words you used were almost identical to one of Emerson's lines.

AnnaG, if this character was from Boston, he must have been a soul-mate of recently (and happily) departed Ted Kennedy and the Junior John Kerry.

It would take far more talent than you could ever muster to link me with these worthies.

Now, let me ask you something and I know I WILL receive an honest answer: Isn't there a little bit of Archie Bunker in all of us, including you? Or an "upper-class" one. like Winchester?

Detroit 442 - maybe baby I could ride with you.

Nah, the 400 4 bbl was no match for the 427.

Although when I was a kid, we had a Pontiac with the Olds 350 4bbl.

442 beats a 427 every time.

Like my 1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Jack you have no idea what you are talking about. The 427 Cobra weighs 2100 lbs and has 550 horsepower.

A machine is just a machine.

My foot on the accelerator of a 1968 442 Cutlass wins over a dolt with a $500,000 piece of expensive junk, anytime.

I often thought what car I would drive if I were independantly rich, winner of a lottery or just a complete idiot like the one cited in SirJosephPorter's post - as pleasure, rather than everyday transportation - and I came up with the car that would reflect my youth, my innocence and my sense for beauty angd grace.

And it would be a 1958 Chevrolet Impala convertible. Preferably fire engine red.

Like so?

Mine would be this (below), but to each their own.
*Make that Red with T-Tops though.

Ron, either you or some of your fellow moderators have gone completely bonkers deleting most of my posts, on other threads, but your picture of the 1958 Impala makes me find the grace in my heart to forgive you.

YJ, that ‘complete idiot’ is a well respected plastic surgeon, filthy rich, he could buy and sell somebody like you many times over. And if you think that a complete idiot can become a plastic surgeon, why didn’t you become one? Surely you are not a complete idiot, you would have made a world renowned plastic surgeon, probably the best ever (since according to you, a complete idiot can become a plastic surgeon)?

It is easy to call somebody names. It is more difficult to aspire to the heights, to the renown that somebody has achieved. If I told him that one poster called him ‘a complete idiot’, he probably would smile indulgently, it wouldn’t even be worth a comment from him. Somebody like you would be beneath contempt to him.

You certainly make him sound like an arrogrant prick, which doesn't surprise me, many (but not all) surgeons are. Usually, though, they're not plastic surgeons. The plastics folks that I know typically understand that most of their business comes from vanity and fashion, and are suitably cavalier about it.

I'm not linking you to anything. Just that what you said was almost identical to what the character said in MASH.

We all have prejudices, yes. But, as for "upper class" types, I really do think their are people that are immensely humble. And those people I admire very much.

A 427 Cobra......I don't think there are too many street legal cars that could keep up with a Cobra.
This is all googleable. :) Both the Chevy L88 427 (430 HP + 480ft/lb of torque) and the Chrysler 426 Hemi (425 HP + 490 ft/lb) were both a good match for the Ford's 427 (it was actually a 425 and it had 425 HP with 480 ft/lb). The Cobra's advantage was its weight to hp ration and its forward to rear weight ratio. Good vehicle but not so good brakes.
BTW, 442s were 400 cu in engines.
the 442 stood for:
4: Four Barrel Carburetion
4: Four On the Floor
2: Dual Exhausts
350 HP, 440 ft/lbs torque

Juan, until I saw the Cobra with my friend the plastic surgeon, I had not even heard of the Cobra. But after that I became interested and looked it up on the internet. Apparently not too many were made. Now they are priceless antiques.
