Merchant ships are traditionally unarmed. I guess it's an honor thing, like hanging your gun at the door before entering the saloon. I suppose there's no reason a ship couldn't have an armed unit come aboard in international waters, then have that unit wait offshore while the ship is in port.

Also, this is the law in times of peace. However, merchant vessels were armed during WWII. It's time to re-arm them and to mobilize marines in order to protect international mercantile interests and prevent needless loss of lives.

Wonder what seamen will say if they are required to defend a ship with their lives? It will definatly raise their pay grades.

My wife won't go on a cruise till cruiselines do something about the rape and abuse that people have gone through on board cruiseships. Some of the stories are almost unbelievable. As far as any authorities are concerned, it's a pass the buck policy because a lot of it is in international waters. And as far as the cruiselines themselves are concerned, clean it up, brush it under the carpet as quick as possible so it doesn't affect business.
