Erik Millett, principal of Belleisle Elementary School, had his decision to stop kids from singing the national anthem each morning hammered by several Conservative MPs in Ottawa on Friday.

N.B. Conservative MPs condemn anthem ban

Patriotism going down the drain..... do you feel schools should have the option of playing O Canada, shouldn't play it, or have no choice but to play it?

Tell me this dude dosen't look like a pot smoking liberal. Problem with many liberals is they always try to do the thinking for others because their way is the best way....so they think anyways.

I have an idea, the first prick who doesn't want to hear our national anthem we build a giant catapult and fling back where they came from.:angryfire:

God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.
Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign.
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen.

Hey, I remember this as a kid. They used to play it at the end of the late movie in the cinemas on the Prairies. People rushed to the exits before the Union Jack stopped waving, It must have been written for the theatres!
PS
The song must have worked. She's been the queen for pretty near 57 years.

Not Maritimers – Take a count on how many are in the Military – Probably transplants – from where I do not know – but I am sure that in a small town the word is out.

Not all children had to sing the national anthem when I grew up, and it isn't foreign students, it was Jehovah's witnesses as I recall. Some people don't consider themselves citizens, they just live here and pay taxes. They also don't vote.

The only problem I have here is that that is now the rule not the exception.

Banning people from singing their national anthem? How is that inclusive, it sends a hostile envirnoment to most children (who are Canadian).

Actually throughout my schooling, none of us ever had to sing, in fact, nobody ever did.... you just stood, listen to the song and carry on with your day.

Hey now, no need to give pot smokers a bad name or anything :p

I don't agree with his dumbass plan, and I don't attempt to force my views on anybody...... everybody can do whatever the heck they want, so long as it doesn't involve me.

Depending upon the weight. As to this banning the anthem some people in positions of authority prove the old adage – Promoted 1 level above qualified – or to their level of incompetence.

I saw it on the news last night. It wasn't a ban on daily singing of the anthem, but merely a discontinuation of the practice. They will still sing it for special commemorations. And there is a point to classtime. With school budgets as they are, every tax dollar counts. Those teachers are still being paid to stand there every day to sing the anthem, and this is time taken away from teaching and study time. There are legitimate logistical issues here having nothing to do with any lack of patriotism. Some biter parent just decided to put a negative spin on it to embarrass the school with some misinformation. There was no ban, just a discontinuation. Children would of course be free to sing the anthem till they turn blue in the face during breaks all they want.

Which would make his no different than any school my kids have gone to. I don't see the big deal.

our anthem should never be thought of 'as boring', or' repetative', it should be a
priviledge to sing it every day and be thankful that we are 'who we are'.

When my kids were very ungrateful from time to time growing up, I would tell them that maybe it's time for an exchange program, and four little undernourished
beaten on children could come stay with me for a year, and my kids could go and
take up their lives for a year, and we would discuss that thought for awhile.
A little waking up and taking notice of one's life and how lucky one is, is good for
the soul.

Maybe those who find the anthem boring and repetative should go and live somewhere such as the sudan, etheopia, north koria, etc.,don't know what their anthem is, but, I'm sure you get my point.

I'm with Juan on this one.

The principal was a candidate for the Greens, which might explain his banning of our national anthem..and also hopefully part of the reason he was so unsuccessful. Back in The Dark Ages[when I was in school,we sang O Canada and God Save the Queen every morning before class]

Good Lord!

I swear, you'd know this guy was "one of those" :) at a glance!

You know, lefty know-it-all, anti-American, I love whatever fad is on today, worries about the kiddies self-esteem, everyone must pass, keeps a beehive in his backyard, drives a volvo, anti-west, has all the intellectual depth of your average turnip, but is convinced he can save the world!

Way too many of these guys teaching.....one of the minor reasons I am NOT teaching.

The singing of the National Anthem should be mandatory every morning.....if you don't like it, home school your kids.

So, why is it that all the focus is on this ONE principal? When I can almost guarantee that schools all throughout ALL of your hometowns have made this exact same decision, why does ONE principal get all the scorn over it?

I fully agree. Bunch of ingrates. As far as I'm concerned, patriotism is to be measured by how often you sing the anthem. Some schools sing it on special occasions. They should all be closed down, shame on them. Some sing it every day, still a lackluster attempt. At the school I went to, we had to sing it every hour on the hour. Anything less just shows the ultimate disrespect for the country. Bunch of ingrates today:p
