Why does the GG decide?

The Governor General has no political constituency. They are designed to look pretty, handsome, and dignified. But not to make any real decisions. They are no more qualified than anyone to decide on these political issues of import. They got the fabulous job with a great office, super perks, great view, but no real authority or responsibility 99% of the time. Then they must suddenly make the right decision right smack in the middle of a crisis? Sounds like a recipe for disaster if you ask me.

Oh sweet, ANOTHER thread about this. The 20 we have on the go (yes, it's hyperbole) weren't enough?

Oh, I like to read threads posted by people who didn't learn anything in school. It restores my faith in the degree to which our education system is useless.

To the OP: the GG did not 'decide' anything, other than to follow the rules of our Parliamentary system.

Guess you never got the little civics lesson on the history and functions of the office of the Governor-General. Maybe you should educate yourself a bit before you go making such sweeping generalizations. And don't read just that page I linked to, spread out a bit, there's a lot more stuff at that site you need to understand.

what I can't figure out is that she gives Harper a six week hiatus to go off and figure out what he has to do while the economy sinks into oblivion

Doesn't he know yet? Can't he figure it out. Once he assumed dictatorial powers (shutting parliment), he should have had the plan in hand

If the economy is going to "sink into oblivion" in six weeks, it's beyond Harper's help, maybe if he "sinks into oblivion" for a couple of weeks over Xmas he might come back with a better attitude. :?:

The real issue was she gives Harper a six week hiatus

I think she should have given him 3-5 days max.

Could he realistically drawn up a budget in 3-5 days?

His budget was "done". It was adding all of the petty garbage to it that got him in trouble.

All' that he had to do was, get rid of the "filler" and just present "A Stimulus Plan" to kick start the economy and stop the markets from hemmoraging

Nothing Harper or the three Stooges can do will stop the markets hemmorhaging, oil is at $41a barrel, gold is down, financial markets around the world are down. To the average Canadian the markets aren't important - what is important is jobs, health and education and how much money is going for bailouts. ONly the budget will deal with that - not a bunch of talk back and forth.

JLM,

Hypothetically speaking.

If Harpo's new budget is a `hum-dinger`, what makes you think he won't renege on it.

imo/jao

r;s

Because it wouldn't be in his own best interests and most people's reason for disliking Harper is because he has a reputation for acting in his own best interest.

So JLM,

In your opinion, he will renege. Or he will not. You are being ambivalent.

IMO/JAO

r;s

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt - he won't- on such matters I'm pretty sure he can be trusted up to the limit of his capabilities.

Please define his capabilities ?

If you are to trust them you must know them ..

I've been told I'm a fairly good judge of character, not that I think for a second that Harper is squeaky clean- but he's not about to deliberately commit political suicide.

Just like drawing up a household budget, it's only a guesstimate based on the current situation, if you wife breaks a leg and you have to hire outside help to coook and clean the house there goes the budget (depending of course on how much you've budgeted for contingencies).
