No, the police were in a no win situation. With a leftarded mayor and council they were not permitted to clamp down hard right at the start of trouble or shoot the bastards that created the mess.
Right, and then we would have been reading about police brutality in the morning papers. Game 5 saw over 100,000 people in the downtown core and save for a few drunks who were dealt with, the crowd was nonviolent. And, not all of those were Canucks fans either. Once the postmortem is done on the riot, I believe we will see that the riot was started intentionally by a group of discontents who came armed and ready for violence.
I saw written on the boarded up windows of the BMO building on Georgia this afternoon: "real fans don't riot." The morning after hangover apparently is to be plagued by No True Scotsman fallacies.
Don't be so ridiculous as to believe that our "hockey fans" don't riot. I think people saying this are fans themselves and are personally offended when the rioters are also called fans. Those people need to take a step back and stop self-identifying so strongly with such a trivial association. Don't take it personally. Not everyone who likes hockey needs to think and act the same as you.
Of course many Canuck fans are 'personally offended" when tarred with the same brush as the mob that caused the riot. It beats me why one would think wearing a Canuck jersey automatically makes someone a fan - for some people it is nothing more than a fashion statement.
I am not a long-time fan of the Canucks but I jumped on their bandwagon gladly when I saw they had a chance to win the Cup, after all I do live in BC. As time went on during the play-offs, more and more people like me, joined the parade and the number of supporters for the Canucks continued to grow. That doesn't make them or me a true Canuck fan and for all of those who supported this team over the decades, it must indeed be very sad to be painted with the same colors as those who were nothing more than johnny-come- latelys to the Canucks fanfare.
The thought has also crossed my mind that were I intent on causing mayhem the best way to blend in with a crowd of hockey fans would be to, like them, wear team apparel.
The Police Chief said the riots were planned and started by anarchists, they should be called urban terrorists..
Whatever you want to call them, I just hope when they are all rounded up they are lined up in front of the national media for photo ops. The medieval practice of stocks and pillories might also be an idea worth thinking about - I know a few people who love the opportunity to throw rotten food at these malcontents. They are the ONLY ones in this entire affair that should be ashamed - not Vancouverites, not the Team and not the other 99,000 fans who were dealt two bitter blows on Wednesday night.
I am so proud of the citizens of Vancouver for their support of the city in its clean-up efforts and for the outpouring of support for the Vancouver police. Good on you, this is the true face of Vancouver. The police chief spoke highly of all the brave citizens who stood up to the crowd and tried to do something in spite of overwhelming odds. There were thugs in this incident but there were heroes too.
