I have no problems giving my money to my kid. I do have problems with giving my money to somebody else's kid.

My son made more money in his first job than I did in my last job. My daughter wasn't far behind.
What money should I give up? This whole premise is haywire.

They're basing it on housing prices and revenue increases.

Basically, younger families make $3,000 more per year (adjusted for inflation), but house prices are 76% higher.

They are entitled to their entitlements. They are the most selfish generation in Canadian history. Let's be thankful that the generation behind them has not been so selfish and has managed to halt the slide. We will dig ourselves out of this hole eventually.

And yours is the STUPIDEST!

Yeah, I wonder how many of the generation who are whining started out working for $1 an hour, two weeks annual holidays, NO stress leave, very little sick leave, no maturnity leave, 10 minute coffee breaks, no flex shifts.

Exactly. The OP reveals a really stupid poll, whoever ran the poll needs to ask important questions or get a real job and create wealth.

Oh yeah! I remember when these and many other 'intitlements' these whiners take for granted were merely a gleam in someone's eye. They have no idea how folks like Tommy Douglas put themselves out on a limb for public ridicule to champion causes like this and how many union strikes etc., it took to get these and many other of the benefits these whiners are acccessing on a daily basis as if they simply grew on the trees in their neighbourhood.

This Kershaw clown is sitting in his vastly over-priced condo with leaking windows making these idiotic comparisons as though they're generic across the land. There have been real estate spikes for every generation and usually a lot more than one or two. I remember well mortage rates in the double digits with no deflection of blame for having made a bad business decision and crying on anyones shoulder being comletely out of the question.

Hey Kershaw; your students can't afford a condo in downtown Vancouver; well tell 'em to rent a walk-up but, if they just have to have a little house and white picket fence to go along with the lease car and two cel-phones with minutes paid by credit cards, tell 'em move to PEI instead of enabling the little darlings to think of someone else being at fault.

Seniors don't want to give up money for younger gen: poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - More evidence that generational tensions are high; a poll finds seniors aren't keen to relinquish publicly-funded services in order to help the struggling younger generations.

Seventy per cent of seniors asked felt they should be a top priority when it comes to doling out government cash.

UBC's Paul Kershaw is surprised most of them say they know families are struggling. "Even so, 80 per cent of Canadians 55-plus say they have earned their fair share of the wealth produced by Canada's economy and therefore deserve to enjoy the benefits."

He believes the older generation might want to think about their kids a little more because they're the ones who will deal with the consequences of actions we take today.

"As the baby boomers in particular approach retirement, they're leaving larger government debts and an environmental record that isn't that great. It's going to be their kids and grandchildren who need to pay for it," he says.

Kershaw notes the result is especially surprising, considering things like housing values and lower poverty rates have made it much easier to retire.

He adds Statistics Canada data show poverty among seniors has declined from 29 per cent in 1976 to less than five per cent in 2009. The poverty rate for families with kids under the age of six is 15 per cent.

The poll also shows 65 per cent of 18-44 year olds believe "a greater share of wealth produced in Canada should be invested in the next generation of families and children."

There is one aspect of "seniors" today out of fairness should be put into perspective. The plight of the seniors today is far less than that of the seniors of 25 years ago. They went through a depression and a War, where as the seniors of today did benefit from 4 decades of good times where jobs were availalbe. BUT that is no reason to start accusing them of greed. The ones today in their 40s who are whining have also had a couple of decades of "milk and honey".

No one gets to choose when they are born. I missed the housing boom in my area by about 5 years; no sense in crying bout it. Make the best of what you got; in other words grow a pair and enjoy life.

I'm fine, myself. But there are people who are struggling because of the economic landscape.

This is not a discussion about greed, it's a discussion about need and we have to accommodate the parties that need it more.

This is also a discussion about practicality, planning for the future and the best use of funds... Regardless of the generation in question or the economic clime, accountability and sustainability must be at the forefront of this discussion.

We don't need to accommodate those who are less well off, we need to give them the opportunity to improve their situation; handing them money doesn't do them any long-term favours.

started out working for $1 an hour,
sounds bad until you realized everything cost a quarter back then..

two weeks annual holidays,
hey maybe you want to live in one of those socialist systems where profits aren't king... but here in our capitalist system time is money, less vacation for our workers the more we produce, the more our rich continue to get richer...
there are people who still get no more than 2 weeks vacation time (depending on the job of course)
NO stress leave,
much less to get stressed about back then
very little sick leave,
much less to get sick about back then
no maternity leave,
irrelevant, as women didn't even work ..
10 minute coffee breaks, no flex shifts.
waaaaaaah

Read an article by an estate lawyer - mother in the Hospitial - Kids thought she was going to kick the bucket. Mother recovers, comes home and sees all her belongings with price listings on them.

Many are so deep in debt they are waiting for the Parent to kick off and they cash in.

Guy i know will not do any repairs - upgrades on his house. Waiting for momma to kick off. She is 96. The other year he put on a new roof and a few improvements. We wondered about her health.

Lots of people in debt, waiting for the parent to kick and they cash.

Always said it was the worst money you ever get.

We bought a new house in 1968 for about twenty thousand dollars. Three years later that house
would have sold for over forty thousand. Today that same house would fetch close to a half million.
Now, over that time salaries went up as well....just not quite as quickly, but every thing evens out
after a while.

When I think of selfish (and entitlenent) I think of 20 somethings not 70 somethings. They younger generation wants everything the older more mature indiviuals have without wanting to put in the work and labour required to get it.
