Ariz. sheriff suspends immigration efforts

Ariz. sheriff suspends immigration efforts | Enquirer-Herald - York and Clover, SC

An Arizona sheriff who led the way for local police across the country to take up immigration enforcement is reconsidering his crackdowns - and other law enforcement officials who followed his lead are expected to eventually back away, too.
Joe Arpaio, the sheriff for metropolitan Phoenix, has temporarily suspended all his immigration efforts after a federal judge concluded two weeks ago that the sheriff's office had racially profiled Latinos in its patrols, Arpaio spokesman Brandon Jones told The Associated Press.
Arpaio critics, including the federal government, are gaining ground in their fight to get the sheriff out of immigration enforcement. Even before the ruling, Washington had stripped Arpaio's office of its special federal immigration arrest powers and started to phase out the program across the country amid complaints that it led to abuses by local officers. The Arpaio ruling is expected to impact state immigration laws in Arizona, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, where local officers question people's immigration status in certain instances.

Maybe he wants to prevent more lawsuits as well.

Who cost Arizona more - illegal aliens or Arpaio?

No one answered [again]!

By the way, Maricopa County is nowhere near the Mexico border so that the idea that Arpissao is protecting against the entry of illegals is total bullshït. Mexico-Arizona border hits Yuma, Cochise, Santa Cruz, and Pima counties. Not Maricopa. Therefore, the racist sHïtlerian bassturd has no business pretending he is protecting the border through his racialist profiling:

Took me a day or two to stumble across this. It happens.

Being the Sheriff of Maricopa County is an elected position. This
Joe What's-his-Pickle sounds like he's been the Sheriff for quite
a while now. Guy must be doing something right, I guess, or he
wouldn't keep getting re-elected.

People can say what they like about Joe Arpaio, but what a lot of people miss is HE DOESN'T GET REPEAT OFFENDERS, that's the bottom line with the penal system! -:)

At a cost of $50+ million. Now the courts ruled he did engage in profling there will be even more lawsuits for false imprisonment, harsassment, and lots more to be awarded in damages.

No surprise that the forum right wingers are not defending him any more as even the Republican dominated courts ruled against him.

More silliness. Why don't you ever do any research before you post this stuff. The recidivism rates did not change when Joe took over. The last stat for youth I saw was 30% recidivism rate under Joe. Only the uninformed would brag about that.

You have provided a lot of your opinion about the whole thing but damn little other than that, although you are still hammering away while we watch you and snicker.
Just reading your assumption of many lawsuits makes me wish for links to real situations. I have no problem with profiling, if a certain colored person has caused someone some grief i don't go looking for another color and if the Mexicans don't like getting caught up in the situation they should try to help the police rather than whining.
What the hell is wrong with people?

Had you bothered to take off the hate blinders and done your homework you would have read my reports which included cites from the conservative Arizona Republic newspaper to PROVE every single point I've made.

But, as always, the froum right wing delusionals persist in their ignorance and wilfull blindness. No wonder there is so much conflict on this forum.

And you think I care that you have a houseful of ambulance chasing lawyers or wannabees who revel on seeing people pay through the nose for real or perceived wrongs......someone would have to be a real sick individual to applaud that.

I'm not surprised that you do.

Go ahead and keep proving it.......

Joe Arpaio Loses: New Times Co-Founders Win $3.75 Million Settlement for 2007 False Arrests

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors this afternoon voted unanimously to approve a $3.75 million settlement for New Times' co-founders, whose false arrests in 2007 were orchestrated by Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were taken from their homes in the middle of the night and jailed on misdemeanor charges alleging that they violated the secrecy of a grand jury -- which turned out never to have been convened.
