I believe it was Barcelona that went from tourism obscurity to something like number 3 in Europe ten years later. This is a huge windfall. What else would be spending money on right now, 40 skeena mills to make up for the forestry depression?
I believe it was Montreal that became famous for spending wads and being in the hole for it till 40 years later.

And it's quite a vibrant place considering it has been through political turbulence ever since.

The Olympics are a terrible investment. it's a short term orgy, with very little long term benefit.
I got to wondering about that, it seems a fairly obvious thing for some economics graduate student to attempt a cost/benefit analysis on as a thesis topic, so I googled "Olympics benefits" and found such a thing, from a Master's student at Queen's named Darren McHugh. He took a close look and concluded, after about 60 pages of analysis and discussion, "...the expected overall net benefit of hosting an Olympic Games is substantially negative." Economic-speak for "it's a loser."

And the stadium was such a good deal that not only did pieces fall off, but even the football team won't play in it. And the velodrome is still a success. And I see that Calgary is a world famous tourist destination now.

Yes, it's fairly common knowledge.

Who And Where Is The Moderator On This Board?

At CC we have 3 mods at the moment. Myself, Ron in Regina, and shadowshiv. Our admin is Andem. There is not a set schedule for when we are here. We all have full time jobs and lives off line and pop in when we can.

If you are concerned that another poster is breaking the forum rules you are very welcome to report it. That way which ever mod is online, they can find it and take a look at it much sooner than just sifting through all the threads.

If you have any general concerns you can always contact any one of us and we will be happy to try and help you out! Hope that answers some of your questions!

As Hazmart has pointed out, the Moderators are Shadowshiv, Hazmart,
& myself ( Ron in Regina. )

Myself, in the last 24hrs, while dealing with the Flu, and being involved in
the Trucking industry, I have either been physically away from a computer
or just not up to reading through the Forum. I can't speak for the other
Moderators as I haven't been in contact with them for the above reasons.

Moderators volunteer their time when they're able on top of the other
responsibilities that life presents (employment, Family, etc...). We, as
Moderators are not here solely as Judges, Referee's, and SPAM Hunters,
but also (like everyone else here) to use the Forum as a source of release
and entertainment. If we didn't, then why bother volunteering what time we
can at all?

With a few exceptions (occasionally we discover that the truly young have
created an account to become a member), we are all adults here and need
to accept responsibility for our own actions. We are all very different people
that have come together to share ideas, opinions, knowledge, & laughter.
Not everyone is going to agree with each other here, or share the same
sense of humor or interests....but that's part of what makes this such an
interesting place to play in.

There is also no reason what so ever that someone can not report a post
by a Moderator when they're also just playing on the Forum. There are times
when we (as Moderators) need to moderate ourselves and don't realize it.
Feel free to point that out (creating an awareness) with a PM or the Report
Button.

The current crop of Moderators will not all be Moderators for life. Several of
the current (& past) Members have accepted the role at one time and have
moved on when the time was right for them to do so. Keep that in mind as
the day may come when any of you might be asked to accept the responsibility
that many of us have taken. It's a rather thankless position, but a necessary one
for the Forum to function, and rewarding in its own way with the sense of duty.

The day may very well come where YOU are the Moderator, entrusted with the
health of the Forum as a diverse and colorful community, knowing that you have
to balance this with your own responsibilities in the real world, and that you can
not please everyone all of the time, nor are you expected to.

A nearly complete shutdown of the forest industry, and mill closures everywhere, yet BC is still in positive territory. Without the investment in these games, under the conditions of the current global recession we'd be in big trouble. I have also seen bank economists say the growth caused by the olympics for a 6 or 7 year period would attribute to about 1% of the economy.

Other host cities have done well. I believe Torino has turned around in a number of ways since the build up an delivery of 2006.

There was a time not long ago when we'd delete a thread like this then kick the crap out of people for a while. It was fun but it didn't do much for the forum. So everyone quit yer whining.

Correction! The Olympics is simply a major raise in taxes for the rest of my life and anyone else around my age that lives in BC. I have yet to come across a BC person who is happy the Olympics are happening here.

The irony here is that, aside from two people having different senses of
humor (& I'm assuming one of them might very well be me ), I have no
idea without a Reported Post as to what specifically brought this Thread
into existence. Without that, I've no idea as to what the Moderators are
being asked to do here, if anything. With that in mind, carry on and have
fun while you're doing so.

Over the past while I too have seen less in the way of personal attacks, but to me it depends on how serious or personal an attack is. Differences of opinion are part
of a discussion. What brought this on I don't know, but the comment I made about
those unhappy work for Vanoc couldn't be it or some have a real thin skin.
As for the Olympics, they are not good for the people of BC. The long term debt is
going to curtail the future economic progress of this Province. The only ones to
benefits will be the real estate and tourism industries. Those two, tourism with its
long list of low paying jobs and the real estate industry the group that sell our land
to those from other lands. In turn those people come here and develop the cities
and towns without regard to what the inhabitants want. They sack up the profits
and leave taxpayers with the long term service debt and social problems.
I hope this exercise is never repeated Canada doesn't need another Olympic Games

Hazmart checked some earlier, & I checked some later. Which one
this pertains to specifically I've no idea.

On a positive note, I'm feeling much more human today than the last
several, so I doubt I had Swine Flu, or Bird Flu, or Monkeypoxs or
some other nasty that sounds like a Zoo related illness.
