Seems like a small potatoes for such a massive arrest

Swedish prosecutors to reopen rape case against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, seek extradition after British prison term ends

Swedish prosecutors had filed preliminary charges in 2010, but it was discontinued during Assanges stay in the embassy in London.

Assange has always denied the allegations, maintaining they were politically motivated because of his work.

He might be innocent; but if he's innocent and sincerely believes that Sweden (a country with a reputation for political neutrality and due process) laid the charges for political reasons, then that raises questions about his general knowledge.

If he's using that as a smokescrean (better to look like a fool than to be found guilty of rape), then shame on him. I still believe in due process, and I'm not accusing him, but it does seem odd that he'd fear a Swedish court if he's innocent.

Get UN out of our jails

BRITAIN’S jails may not always be perfect.

But they are a world away from the squalid and brutal hellholes found in corrupt third world states.

Why are UN inspectors allowed to check up on Wikileaks founder Assange?

So why are we allowing United Nations inspectors who normally probe torture to check up on Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in HMP Belmarsh?

After a UN working group called his sentence “disproportionate” the visitors were allowed to oversee medical tests and discuss his case with no guard present.

Arrogant Assange, who faces possible extradition to Sweden over rape allegations and the US for leaking sensitive documents, is serving time for skipping bail and holing up in Ecuador’s embassy.

We don’t need lectures from meddling UN human rights experts on how to run British prisons and Justice Secretary David Gauke should be forced to explain this dangerous precedent.

Otherwise any lag with a grudge will get the UN to give the governor a dressing down.

So, why be bothered about UN inspections? Those people must see some authentic hell holes around the globe.

What's so special about Assange that he gets such treatment when Britain's 84,000 other prisoners don't?

Well, everyone wants to do something to Assange. The Americans would like to execute him, no doubt, for "treason" or the like even though he isn't an American. America is "exceptional" and no one is safe from their law, anywhere.

Well Assange leaked information that could endanger some countries' national security and is wanted on suspicion of rape, so what's the problem and why is he allowed visits from UN inspectors?

He's currently serving 50 weeks in prison for jumping bail and should be treated just like every other prisoner.

Or should be be given favourable and special treatment because he's a lefty?

How about, inspections because he's a political prisoner?

He's in prison for jumping bail as, no doubt, are many other prisoners.

He's just an ordinary prisoner jailed simply for breaking the law. He should not be treated any differently to any other prisoner.

I'm not a fan of Assange, by the way but the persecution of him from Day 1 smells like rotten cheese. The Americans are right pissed and so they extract favours from counties like Sweden to get their way.

Your thesis being that if you piss off the powerful, you should be forgiven actual crimes you commit against the powerless?

My thesis is that American law reaches all over the planet and ensnares those who have no say in it's making, anywhere the US wishes to grab them. I'm sure that the Romans felt the same way about their hegemony.
