Star Wars? Trump proposes military space force

WASHINGTON — America should create its own separate military space force, President Donald Trump mentioned in an offhand remark Tuesday that would change the course of U.S. space policy.
But don’t expect Captain Kirk ordering phasers set on stun, Battlestar Galactica or ray guns blazing in orbit in the near future, space experts said. And some said a military space force may make it harder to keep Earth’s orbit a place of peace.
Saying his national security strategy “recognizes that space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air and sea,” Trump said at a San Diego Marine Corps base that he’s considering “a space force” that would be the equivalent of the Air Force, Army and Navy.
Trump said at first he wasn’t serious when he floated the concept, but “then I said what a great idea, maybe we’ll have to do that.”
This is more about boosting reconnaissance and cybersecurity than fighting in orbit, said Sean O’Keefe, who was both NASA administrator and Navy secretary under President George W. Bush.
Trump’s own defence secretary and Air Force secretary argued vociferously against it when members of Congress pushed it last year, O’Keefe said. You can emphasize more help for the military in space without going to the massive organizational change and expense, he said.
It could be a bureaucratic nightmare, said O’Keefe, a professor at Syracuse University.
He said some people may argue that a space force would “compromise the sanctity of considering space to be off limits from warfare.”
Ever since the Space Age started with the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik, there has been a military and national security aspect to space, even though there are treaties and a United Nations committee that explicitly talk about keeping space a place of peace. In the 1950s, President Dwight Eisenhower established two separate space programs — a civilian one that became NASA, and a military one. NASA is much more public, but the military program is just as big.
The military space program has mostly been led by the Air Force. For the past several years, the military has been flying an unmanned space plane, a lot like the retired civilian space shuttle but smaller, experts said.
“It’s really what we’re already doing but giving elevated status to the mission,” American University space expert Howard McCurdy said of Trump’s proposal.
The military toyed with the idea of an Air Force space station in orbit in the 1960s, but President Richard Nixon’s administration killed the idea, mostly because it found that robotic space efforts were more effective and efficient, McCurdy said.
McCurdy, O’Keefe and others said any space force would probably consist of cadets on the ground operating robotic systems in space.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology astronautics professor and former NASA deputy administrator Dava Newman said she prefers space to be as peaceful as possible.
“Space is for exploration and lifting up humanity,” Newman said. “We should learn from our mistakes on Earth and keep space peaceful.”

KABUL — When Asadullah Poya’s wife gave birth to their third child in a tiny village in rural Afghanistan, he immediately thought of Donald Trump.
He had just read a Dari translation of what appears to be “Trump: How to Get Rich,” published in 2004 by the then-star of “The Apprentice.”
“I thought, ‘This is a great man,”‘ Poya said.
So when his baby came into the world in August 2016, and he saw that the boy had an unusual shock of blond hair, he named him Donald Trump, hoping it would bring him good fortune.
It hasn’t.
Relatives and neighbours were furious that he broke with tradition and gave his son a non-Muslim name. He was forced to move his family to Kabul, and they’ve received death threats online.

LOS ANGELES — Jim Carrey is being criticized on social media for a portrait he painted that is believed to be White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
The actor and comedian on Saturday tweeted the painting with the caption: “This is the portrait of a so-called Christian whose only purpose in life is to lie for the wicked. Monstrous!”
Some Twitter users accused Carrey of shaming because of the unflattering portrait. Others were critical of his use of Christian.
A spokeswoman for Carrey confirms it is his painting. But she would not confirm it is Sanders.

Jim Carrey is using his art to slam U.S. leader President Donald Trump and his staff.
The Ace Ventura: Pet Detective star took to Twitter on Wednesday to share a series of photos depicting the controversial leader in an unflattering light.
One image features Trump’s new attorney Joe diGenova as a troll hanging from the rear view mirror, showing Russian monuments, of a vehicle driven by Trump.
“Lawyer and lucky charm Joe diGenovia (sic) hopes to put Dirty Donald’s troubles in the rearview mirror,” Carrey captioned the piece. “But the objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.”
The work was released a day after the star released a painting of Trump dressed as the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz.
“THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST WING AND PUTIN’S FLYING MONKEYS,” the 56-year-old wrote, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the vicious monkeys that appear in the classic story.
Putin has been accused to interfering with America’s 2016 presidential election to help Trump win.
Carrey began sharing artwork inspired by his disdain for Trump’s policies last August, when he tweeted a painting of the former reality star on a sinking ship named USS Trump. The vessel is shown capsizing in a literal sea of lies.
“WHAT WILL IT TAKE for the GOP (Republican National Committee) to throw this madman overboard? HOW LOW MUST WE SINK before REPS become patriotic?” he asked.

NEW YORK — An activist art group has staged an exhibit featuring live rats and a Donald Trump impersonator inside a Trump hotel in New York City.
The Daily News reports that the group called Indecline installed the guerrilla art show inside a suite at the Trump International Hotel.
The newspaper says seven people showed up at the hotel Thursday night carrying suitcases filled with supplies.
Over the next 24 hour they transformed the suite into a shocking exhibit featuring a Trump impersonator in a jail cell surrounded by rats and McDonald’s wrappers.
The group cleaned up the installation before checking out early Saturday.
A woman who answered the phone at the hotel said she could not comment.
Indecline’s other stunts have included a naked Trump statue in Union Square last August.

An enraged Texas councilwoman faces disorderly conduct charges after being accused of publicly berating a teenage girl in an unhinged rant sparked by a Donald Trump T-shirt.
The girl’s father told Houston’s KPRC his daughter and a group of friends were standing in line at a local cookie shop last Saturday when they were approached by Kellye Burke.
The West University Place councilwoman was reportedly triggered by the girl’s pro-Trump shirt.
“(A) woman came up to them and screamed, ‘Grab em by the p—-, girls!’” the girl’s father told KPRC.
“Then, she yells it again … The girls were getting kind of scared.”
The friends left in fear and alleged Burke took pictures as they fled.
“My little girl essentially wanted to know if this woman was going to hurt her,” the concerned dad told the station.
The only thing hurt, though, was Burke’s reputation.
The councilwoman cowered behind her front door when approached by a reporter.
“I’m putting my kids to bed!” Burke responded to a KPRC reporter. “Go away!”
Burke later apologized to the family, according to the report.
The girl’s dad says his plan is to let voters decide Burke’s fate.

LATROBE, Pa. — A woman is claiming in a lawsuit that a house that was turned into a shrine to then-presidential candidate Donald Trump played a part in a car accident in which she was severely injured.
The suit by Kelly Roadman contends the shrine acted as a distraction when another driver struck her car in October 2016.
The home in Unity Township, Pennsylvania, that became known as the “Trump House” was painted like an American flag, with a 12-foot-high waving Trump cutout out front.
The Tribune-Review reports that Roadman’s car was struck when a driver tried to turn left to view the display. She is seeking more than $30,000 in damages.
The property owner could not be reached for comment.

Russian sex guru facing charges in Thailand says she fears for her life if expelled

BANGKOK — Police in Thailand have filed new charges against a self-described Russian sex guru and a woman who claims to have evidence of Russian ties to President Donald Trump’s election campaign.
The woman, Anastasia Vashukevich, also known as Nastya Rybka, has attracted widespread attention for claiming to have recordings of Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, a crony of President Vladimir Putin, discussing interference in the U.S. election. She is being held in an immigration detention centre and has said she fears for her life and pleaded not to be expelled to Russia.
Col. Apichai Krobpetch, a police superintendent in Pattaya, where the two were arrested with eight others for working illegally by holding a sex training course, confirmed Wednesday that additional arrest warrants had been issued for soliciting, with a maximum prison term of 10 years, and conspiracy, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years.
The original charge on which all 10 were held was working without a permit, punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment. Three of the 10 have already received a suspended jail sentence of six months and been ordered to leave the country. The others will have to appear in court on April 17 to hear the new charges.
The group was arrested on Feb. 25 in a hotel meeting room in Pattaya, a seaside resort city noted for its sex industry and popularity with Russian visitors. The lessons were attended by about 40 Russian tourists, many wearing T-shirts saying “Sex animator” in English with an arrow pointing to the wearer’s crotch. The course was led by Alexander Kirillov, also known as Alex Lesley, who was Vashukevich’s mentor.
Vashukevich, who carries a passport from Belarus, became the centre of a public scandal in early February when Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny published an investigation drawing on her social media posts suggesting corrupt links between billionaire Deripaska and a top Kremlin official, Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Prikhodko. The report featured video from Deripaska’s yacht in 2016, when Vashukevich claims she was having an affair with him and allegedly recorded him talking about Russian interference in U.S. politics.
Deripaska has been linked to Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign manager has been indicted on money laundering charges in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.
Deripaska is one of 24 Russian officials and tycoons faced with new sanctions imposed by the United States last month as Washington stepped up its condemnation of Russia’s actions in recent years, including its 2014 annexation of Crimea, support for Syrian President Bashar Assad, hacking attacks and meddling in Western elections. The metals tycoon controls a business empire with assets in aluminum, energy and construction and is worth $5.3 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

Russian bad girl, Anastasia Vashukevich, says she has info on how Russia manipulated the U.S. election.INSTAGRAM
A Russian sex guru and his harem of hotties have skated on labour law charges levelled against them in Thailand.
But the worst could be yet to come.
One of Alexander Kirillov’s courtesans, Anastasia Vashukevich, claims she has evidence of Moscow’s malicious machinations during the 2016 presidential election in the U.S.
Vashukevich — a model and escort — has blamed U.S. officials for their predicament. She previously pleaded to them for help and political asylum.

But the hormone-charged hijinks got a bucket of ice water tossed on them by Thai officials. Team sex still faces other charges that could land them in prison for 10 years.
The group was arrested Feb. 25 in a hotel meeting room in Pattaya, a Thai seaside resort city popular with Russian visitors.
The sex lessons they hosted were attended by about 40 Russian tourists. Some participants wore T-shirts saying “Sex animator” in English with an arrow pointing to the wearer’s crotch.
Kirillov and Vashukevich, with half a dozen other people, were taken back Tuesday to a Pattaya court from the immigration detention centre in Bangkok where they are being held.

Unashamed sexual activity is business as usual for Pattaya, which is notorious for its sordid nightlife, but the allegations by Vashukevich, who uses the name Nastya Rybka on her racy social media postings, have drawn worldwide attention.
Vashukevich’s earlier revelation of an alleged affair with Oleg Deripaska, a Russian oligarch close to President Vladimir Putin, fueled opposition allegations in Russia of official corruption and enraged the Kremlin.
Vashukevich claims to have audio recordings of Deripaska that provide evidence of Russian meddling in the U.S. polls.
Deripaska has been linked to Paul Manafort, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager who has been indicted on money laundering charges in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.
Cops last week added additional charges against them of soliciting to provide sexual services, which carries a maximum prison term of 10 years, and conspiracy to solicit, which is punishable by up to seven years.
With good reason, the sexual adventurers fear violent recriminations from Russia, which has shown a willingness to go to the ends of the earth to liquidate its enemies.

Maria Bamford's getting the attention she wanted.
American comedian Maria Bamford has filed legal papers urging a judge to keep President Donald Trump away from her and accusing the U.S. leader of keeping her awake at night.
The stand-up claims the ever-present threat of nuclear annihilation has left her feeling anxious and depressed.
She wants lawmakers to stop Trump before he goes too far, according to TMZ.
In her legal papers, Maria cites Trump’s boast: “I too have a nuclear button and my button works” as one major cause for concern, and she is asking a judge to keep the leader at least 1,000 yards away from her.
The legal bid is part of a promotion for the comedian’s new comedy tour, which begins on Tuesday.

Shania Twain is apologizing after telling a British newspaper that she would have voted for U.S. President Donald Trump if she were eligible.
In an article posted on The Guardian’s website Sunday, the Canadian pop star said she would have supported Trump because “even though he was offensive, he seemed honest.”
The comment was met with both praise and condemnation online, and led the Timmins, Ont., native to apologize in a series of tweets Sunday evening.
She said the question caught her off guard, and she regrets answering without providing more context.
Twain says she is “passionately against discrimination of any kind,” and she does “not hold any common moral beliefs with the current president.”
Twain’s most recent album, “Now,” was released in September. It marked her return to the studio after 15 years.
She’s about to embark on her first album tour since 2002, with dates in most major Canadian cities.

MADRID — A woman in Spain has found unexpected fame on social media after many found she bore a striking resemblance to U.S. President Donald Trump.
A journalist reporting on farming in northwestern Spain posted on Instagram a picture of Dolores Leis dressed in farm clothing with a hoe over her shoulder, prompting thousands of responses.
The 64-year-old has since been asked to comment on pressing U.S. policy and international issues — though she has shown more concern for a moth plague threatening her potato crops.
“I say that it must be because of the colour of the hair,” Leis told the La Voz de Galicia newspaper Tuesday.
She is different to Trump on one issue though — she doesn’t use a mobile phone and has little interest in online chatter.
Leis, who appears standing in the middle of her farming plot, her frowning face looking away from the camera and blond hair held by a diadem, has many fans now.
“Can we replace Trump with this hard working lady?” one responder on Instagram asked.
Others, who called Leis “Trump’s Galician sister,” made an online call to research the president’s family roots in the Costa da Morte, or Death Coast, the rocky shore in northwestern Spain with a long history of shipwrecks.

A Galician native who has lived in the same town since she married her husband four decades ago, Leis works at home and at her farm, where the reporter found her last week planting potatoes.
Leis told the newspaper she has not felt overwhelmed by sudden fame because, without a smartphone, the online buzz is easy to ignore.
“I look at everything that my daughters show me, but it never stung my curiosity to have one (phone),” she said.
