One problem is raising the gas tax without lowering other taxes to compensate. If we just raise the gas tax but other taxes are all high too, then where's the incentive to steer away from gas when everything else is taxed almost as much?
If we raise the gas tax and lower other taxes, then consumers will notice more of a contrast and this will give them an incentive to try to avoid the gas tax.

Doesn't really matter what they do with taxes. The simple fact is that electric cars are only suitable for a small portion of the country. For the vat majority it just means more disposable income will be stolen by the government instead of injected into the economy. No different than when interest rates were 20%.

When eco taxes force an increase in product price more GST is collected as well.

Gvt makes money only when a transaction occurs, and you'd think that they'd want to encourage as many transactions as possible
