The Romans did it because they were imperialists. They not only had to defend what they had, they also needed the troops to continue expanding. Not exactly a great example coming from a "progressive".

But it CLEARLY IRKS the Beijing Butchers that Hong Kong has rights that other Chinese do not have and so Beijing has been trying to erode those rights! That effort has culminated in the latest protests and riots in Hong Kong!!!!!

The Beijing Butchers are under huge pressure - from both domestic and foreign sources!!
Beijing badly wants to repress various minorities in their country such as Uighurs, Muslims, Tibetans and the people living in “special economic zones” such as Hong Kong and Singapore!!
In addition Beijing is driving hard to take a DOMINANT SPOT on the world economic stage!! The social and economic consequences of the disastrous “one child policy” are coming home to roost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most Chinese prefer boy children- and millions of female fetuses were aborted- with many Chinese men now unable to find mates- producing severe social diss- satisfaction!!!
