T&T getting a decent result is a shock to you because you're English. They can beat Paraguay.

I'm beginning to wonder if people automatically dismiss a team's chances simply because they're not from Europe (or Brazil and Argentina).

Hey Toro, the US have zero chance of making it out of their group

Toro, what ya gotta realise is that for a very very long time, England treated FIFA ( a predominantly french organisation) with distain, I mean, they saw it as a joke, kind of "who the hell do they think they are?, why should we bother entering a FRENCH competition playing OUR game"

nope, England didnt actually care for the world cup until it was decided it would be held there, which is amazing considering in the first "real" world cup that England, not only entered to keep the status quo and peace, but to actually play to win.....and they did.

Bare in mind in most countries tht have football, it was founded by english expats, for example a man from my town founded Brazillian football.

What does irritate me however is FIFA rankings...they really are a joke......but still, thats why England did so badly in the early years.

But the 70's were god-awful years for english football, and you can thank Graham Taylor for 1994 which was disgracful

Daz

That was true up until 1950.

When the US beat England 1-0 in Belo Horizonte, Stanley Matthews - who was on the bench because be was being rested for "better" opposition - said that when the final whistle blew, he hadn't noticed that he had dug his fingernails so deep into his palms that they were bleeding because he was so tense. England sent their best team to that tournament, and every other tournament after that.

And as any student of football history knows, this self-styled myth of English superiority in world football was shattered in 1953 when Hungary, with Puskas and Kocsis et. al., crushed England at Wembley 6-3. They then proved it wasn't a fluke by destroying England 7-1 in Budapest several months later.

So England never went into another World Cup after playing Hungary thinking they were the best football playing nation in the world by birthright.

Nah Toro, even after the US win, England really couldnt (I dunno if you use this phrase over the pond) give a toss about the world cup, sure, they were humiliated by Puskas, but anyone would be, the man was a machine, possibly better than Pele.

But I think a lot of England still thought they were the best by birthright until about 62. Although I must say...how the bleedin heck do the USA get to be 4th in the FIFA rankings and England 10th?...we did beat you comfertably in chicago with a second team!!

although the US are a much better side now than they ever were.

At least England didn't cheat their way to the 1966 World Cup Final or take drugs to enhance our performance, unlike Germany who were caught injecting illegal performance inhancing drugs into their arms just before the 1954 World Cup Final against Hungary. They went on to win 8-3.

Nearly every World Cup Final that Germany have got to, they have got their by cheating, fouling, and scraping through on penalty shoot-outs. That's precisely what they did in 2002. Whenever England get through to the World Cup Final - probably this year - we'll get through because of skill and talent.

I wouldn't take too much notice of FIFA's World Rankings. USA are ranked 5th in the world, England 10th and Germany 19th.

But the USA is only ranked so high because of the opposition that they come up against. Being a North American team, most of the USA's opponents are teams such as Mexico, Jamaica, Cuba, Canada, Costa Rica, Bahamas, St Vincent and the Grenadines, etc etc. Hardly big, world-beating teams. The US finds it extremely easy to play all these minnows, and is why they nearly always qualify for the World Cup by finishing top of the North American World Cup Qualifiers Group and why they are ranked so high in the world. Whereas England and other European teams play mostly European teams, teams that are much more difficult opponents.

So I wouldn't take too much notice of the World Rankings. I mean, if you mostly play teams such as Costa Rica and Canada then you are bound to be ranked 5th in the world.

And England lost to 10-man Belarus in Reading.

No, they didn't.

The England "B" team, the second-string side and not the actual senior side, lost 2-1 against the full-strength Belarus side, and even then their 2nd-goal was scored when England B goalkeeper Green was injured and play should have been stopped.

I think the first day's events show clearly that cockiness can cost dearly.

Sweden is licking its wounds.

England's team must be celebrating very quietly and thanking the grass for being slippery around Paraguay's goalposts.

Go Spain Go!!!!!!!

Excuses and rationalizations.

England B should beat 10-man Belarus at home.

And England's third "goal" never crossed the line.

Hungary beat Germany 8-3 in the group stages. Germany won 3-2 in the final. Hungary was the best team in the world by far, and its a shame they never won that title.

toro, it was 4-2, so in the end, what does a goal matter, simply put (just like Beckenbaur said) '66? 21 years?, Russian Linesman? 10 million dead?, goal.

it doesnt matter in the end, all I can say is that Bobby's boys deserved the world cup in '66, they deserved it in 70 as well, but never mind, at least England truely appreciate the game we invented (shouldda patented it to be honest, the nation would have made sooo much money).

We named it Association Football as well, and unlike every other English game, its truely a world uniting game.......not just for little girls

thats not xenophobia though
