BARRIE, Ont. — A 21-year old woman says she is devastated after the octogenarian she accused of kidnapping her in a terrifying incident walked out of court a free man on Monday.
Harold George Dean, 86, of Collingwood, hobbled out of court after the Crown agreed to drop a kidnapping charge in exchange for a peace bond which prohibits him from having contact with the woman.
Under the terms of the bond, the Crown also agreed to drop charges of kidnapping and sexual assault in a separate incident involving another woman. Dean is not allowed to have contact with that woman, either.
Soft-spoken Jorden Larose, of Stayner, said she “started to cry” after learning the man she accused of kidnapping her walked out of court facing no charges.
“I called my mom and dad — they are pretty angry,” she added.
While no facts were read into court Monday, a bail hearing held in September 2012 heard that Dean was obsessed with younger women.
During the bail hearing, court heard he picked up a young hitchhiker, refused to let her go and sexually assaulted her in July 2012. She got away and called police.
A week after being released on bail, he was charged with kidnapping Larose. Police said he forced her into his car while she was walking alone on Hogback Rd. in the village of New Lowell, west of Barrie, on Aug. 5, 2012.
In an interview, Larose said she was walking alone in daylight to visit a friend when an elderly man pulled up beside her.
She refused when the man ordered her into his vehicle, but was grabbed from behind and thrown into his car.
“I was shocked, I was dumbfounded,” Larose said.
She recalled struggling to get out the passenger side and became even more frightened when he hit the auto lock button.
“He kept slowing down and looking for some trail off the road,” she said. “I didn’t know if I should hit him or if he would hit me back with something, or if we would crash.”
The woman said she got away when the driver stopped the car. She hid in the deck area of a house until the man gave up looking for her and drove away.
In 2009, Dean was convicted of one count of assault and received a suspended sentence with two years probation.
In August 2001, Dean was convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to 18 months of probation. In 1996, he was convicted of assaulting a police officer and received a $200 fine.
The Crown noted Dean is in poor health and no longer has a driver’s licence.
Jorden Larose, 21, of Stayner, accused Harold George Dean, 86, of kidnapping her on Aug. 5, 2012.

It's stories like this that devastate people's faith in the justice system. I don't care if he's in his 80's, he's a repeat offender and his age didn't seem to be a problem before. He can just as easily live out his last days in a cell as he can elsewhere and innocent people will not be at risk. A peace bond is not going to stop this guy.

Oh good, so he won't be driving anymore, because that would break the law, and he won't do that.

When you've let someone out of jail and their first response is to break the law again, why would you think a peace bond would matter to that person?

Just saying :)

What you're repeatedly saying is that Canadians let people out of prison to look better than you. You might want to, instead of whining in every last thread on the legal system, open a thread of your own and see if you can prove that's why our legal system makes the decisions it does. It would be interesting to see you actually try to prove.

Surely you're joking!

Certainly people in this forum have said that but I doubt that Canada does this intentional.

Albeit certain Canadians use it as a source of pride except when it backfires as it has to this poor woman. To which a "prop" (as some would call it) showing her face has been presented.

Why should I open up a new thread when so many are provided for me to participate in with regards to this topic?

Why should I bring the Wrath of the Mods using their deadly "Merge" sword upon such a redundant thread?
