No, Muz, living together for exes is not common in Russia, but that does happen sometimes. And the reason is simply that one of the couple has no other place to live. Real estate prices are sky-high right now, and only the really well-to-do can afford to buy a flat, not to mention a house. Besides, Moscow is a very expensive city, and even renting a flat in Moscow costs more than most people can afford, so sometimes divorced people are forced to live together, just because they have no other place to go.
Why divorce instead of trying to make things work when you know that you will have to live with this person anyway, is another question, though. I don't get it myself...

this is only a source of amusement to people because it was a man who was the victim. If a man had set light to a woman's groin, all hell would be let loose and the culprit would be in danger of death from anyone who recognized him. We'd all be screaming for his blood.
