Sooner or later China is going to rule the world just as America is doing now ..... So, we should begin inviting China into investments within Canada today. Sell them everything that is not nailed down. Make America bid against the Chinese for everything. Let China buy all our debt like the U.S. is doing now. Allow China to construct a pipeline from Alberta to Ontario and then north to Hudson Bay. Give China total access to the North West Passage.

Canada does not hold the upper hand anymore and will have to be a lot more flexible on NA concerns, the only advantage is that they can concentrate on strictly Canadian concerns.

US President Donald Trump warned that Congress shouldn't interfere in the future of the NAFTA free trade agreement, threatening to "entirely terminate it."

Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that "There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA," also noting that the agreement was "one of the worst Trade Deals ever made." According to Trump, the US had "lost thousands of businesses and millions of jobs" due to the agreement.
Earlier this week, the US president said that August 31 was the deadline for concluding the trade talks with Canada. He later said during a speech in North Carolina that Canada had taken advantage of the United States "for many years."

Where extortion is the new "negotiation".

Empty threats from an empty brain... extortion tactics only work in Godfather movies.

Well.....he certainly DOES run the US administration like a Mafia Don(ald ). His supporters seem to LIKE that method of doing things.........regardless of the "casualty "list That casualty list is growing with only Russia and NK in a favoured position.

That alone speaks volumes

Trump is playing a dangerous game........ and does not seem to give a damn as to the potential consequences. to his malicious ruthlessness.

What happened to the built in checks and balances?? (anyone that opposes him is fired / humiliated, and degraded. .........Trump's version of "sleeping with the fishes"

Tear the phucking thing up and tell Trump to go to hell.

Absolutely. He's the one with the political problem if he can't cut a deal with Canada, of all places, gong into the mid-terms. Trump has delivered precious little in his mandate and trashing the world's biggest trade agreement while replacing it with absolutly nothing does not help Trump, politically.

The deal with Mexico is terrible for America.

BY the time it gets through congressional review it will be dead.

That'll give some future American administration the excuse to seize the Canadian oil fields for strategic, national security reasons. When the Americans boast about their energy self-sufficiency, they include all that incoming Canadian oil. They do not see it off or count it as "imported". They consider it to be theirs and they throw us token payment for it. If the Chinese did any of what you suggested, it would end any pretense of that oil being "Canadian".

You want China to rule Canada.

Trump warns Congress to keep out of NAFTA talks with Canada

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/na...836?cmp=news-digests-canada-and-world-evening

This is more than just a deal for Trump.......... there is an element of vindictiveness. And that alone makes him a lousy "leader". as he has only HIS interest at heart. Not what is best for both counties. He has NO objectivity or fairness in his DNA.

Wonder what would happen.......if there is no deal......as per trump dictum..... We might have to wait until Trump is gone from office to work out something constructive for both nations. If there is no deal......does the original NAFTA stay in place?? Hopefully SANITY and SOUND REASON will be restored in the US....so it can be done.

Not sure we should negotiate with the US as its leader has too many legal issues going on........ has shown signs of mental instability , and cannot be trusted.

We are at a pivotal time in history.......aren't we??

It would seem so. I'm not surprised to find out the the USA is a sunny day friend. We need to gp forth and connect with more of the world. To do that, we need to build some of our own power and not continuously ride on Uncle's Ssm'e shirt tails for everything. Current events tell us that it doesn't help us, at all.

Indeed.........and with the US being Russia friendly it kinda pus us in the middle of two power hungry nations. both of which have a divide and conquer mentality.Perhaps the only "sides" we should take are those of the commonwealth countries...... and those that are essentially neutral. IF we take sides at all. Our military should be strictly peace keeping.

We should have clued in when we saw how the US reacted when we refused to join them in their stupidity in Iraq Remember the bad mouthing and THREATS we "tolerated"??

The British are going to need our friendship again, pretty soon post-Brexit and after they find out that the "special" trade relationship that Trump has in mind for them is a totally one sided one with Britons buying US goods and services but not shipping anything back to the US except for Scotch Whiskey.

Good point. We should "make ourselves available."...

In reality we might and do have more in common with Europe than the US. ........And the commonwealth countries do have a natural bond.

As far as the US........ we maintain a constructive , positive, BUSINESS realtionship with them.......... and try not to get involved in the dirty games they play.

Seems CDA has handled this mess with professional dignity and not reacting to their bullshit. ..and should not reduce itself to their level.
