Why is food more expensive in BC?

Could be a carry over from the old days when B.C. traditionally had the highest wages across Canada.
Truer words were never spoken, I only did that a few times, spent way too
much money and arrived home with some food that I would normally never buy, and my original grocery list got much bigger.
I don't understand.
Are you saying that farms can't sell to the public?
Buying from farms over here, believe it or not, some even have interact thank god b/c I never have cash or small bills on me.
This is my first time buying from farms, so I'm all new to this.

I've not been much of a 'flyer' reader in the past, shop at the safeway for 'air miles', but now I follow the flyers in detail, and shop around, saves money, they
compete with each other, and that helps us.
I know Safeway isn't the cheapest, but we have enough air miles now to do our
trip in the fall, so I will shop around now, and buy the bargains, 'if' they are what
I want. Must be whole, healthy food, and grade A meat.

Our Safeway is a great place to hit on the first Tuesday of the month. Take your pick of customer appreciation day goodies of either bonus air miles or 10% off. We load up on Kicking Horse coffee, Earl/Lady Grey tea, certain paper supplies, some seafood, dishsoap, etc.
I always do the first Tuesday of the month. Ten times air miles, have accumulated 9 thousand air miles, but am in the process of spending all of them.
Kicking horse coffee (Kootenay Crossing is my favourite).
We like 454 and Grizzly. Usually grab the 10% off thing. Living in the Kootenays kinda spoiled us. Don't want to travel. Got a fondue set last time we used air miles. lol
I think as long as you have Safeway's card and watch carefully what you buy, I think Safeway is about as good as you'll find. Buy Low is probably a close 2nd if you are interested in good meat and produce, Extra Foods may be the cheapest all round but often the quality is 2nd rate and they are often out of items. Quality Foods on Vancouver Island was very good when we lived there.
Around here, Saveon has better produce, meat is iffy as is the bakery. Safeway has good meat, great deli, good bakery. The rest seem to be not so good at much.
Then there are the little individual jobbies, and they vary. Used to be an IGA in Kalso we liked but it was across the lake and now it's expensive. Have no idea what the food's like.

Huh, we live on the island, why would anyone want to leave here, but we haven't travelled for years, and the last trip was south a couple of times,
bored with that, so we'll do eastern canada to western canada, have never
done that.
Yeah, we're spoiled too, moved here in l980 and feel like we're still on vacation.
B/c one of the rentals had a pic of the house & there was definitely snow there.

Even Vegas gets snow occasionally.
This past winter was the most snow we have ever had. For some reason Mother Nature had inverted weather patterns (here in PA anyway).
There was a ton of snow in town, yet the mountains surrounding us stayed bare.
Maybe next winter it won't snow at all. *shrug* Who knows?
I am an hour away from Nanaimo. I'm like you and won't travel to buy food. We have the usual places....Safeway, Wal-mart, Quality Foods (locally owned), Fairway (again, a local chain), Extra Foods, and Zellers.
Our farmers are all small. Unfortunately they all have to have "real" jobs to pay the bills.
All the dairy farms are gone now because people would rather shop at the chain stores than insist upon buying local. :-(
Now we cry because of the cost to bring in goods.:roll:
Anyways.....we still have small farms that you can buy from. If they start to show a profit, the gov't steps in. Nobody wants that, hense the cash deals or doing trades for other goods. Salmon traded for venison....that type of thing.
Everybody is happy.
