Why don't the Yankies sell Detroit back to the Canadians?

It's not doing anything productive, the place is a trashy wasteland and no-one in the US wants it.

Help cut the US debt load, and the Canadians could afford to buy it too.

Besides, the Canadians founded in the first place and it was a nice, pleasant village until Canada handed it back over after the War of 1812.

Why don't you invest in the city then?

You're full of half-baked solutions.

We will buy Detroit if the Yanks throw in Alaska. Our offer is $7.2 million, the same price the US paid the Russians for Alaska in 1867.

Ahhhhh, Seward's "folly"!

Well there you go, I didn't know that. So Canadians keep the franchise alive.

Joe Louis Arena is about 1/2 kilometre by crow from the Canadian border and Windsor Pop. 211,000 is a kilometre away for starters. Detroit will still contribute a handful.

It is a primary business, cultural, financial, and transportation center in the Metro Detroit area, a region of 5.2 million people, and serves as a major port on the Detroit River connecting the Great Lakes system to the Saint Lawrence Seaway. It was founded on July 24, 1701, by the French explorer and adventurer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac.
The Detroit area emerged as a metropolitan region with construction of an extensive freeway system in the 1950s and 1960s. The name Detroit sometimes refers to the Metro Detroit area with a population of 4,296,250 for the six-county Metropolitan Statistical Area,[7] the United States' 13th-largest, and a population of 5,218,852 for the nine-county Combined Statistical Area as of the 2010 Census.[5] The Detroit–Windsor area, a commercial link straddling the Canada–U.S. border, has a total population of about 5,700,000.[8] The Detroit metropolitan region currently holds roughly one-half of the state's population.[4][7]

There you go lots of hockey fans nearby!

Lease what to China? The city is destroyed.

I think what we are getting is largely a bunch of media hype, the past couple of days. Detroit is in the centre of a densely populated area containing 10 times the population of Detroit and I doubt if they are all drawing welfare!

Except it's more like this...

Hell we could just annex Detroit. I bet the people would be on board with universal health care and getting shot way less. lol.

I'm just sitting here laughing my *** off at the replies..

When I heard some people on CNN suggesting this.. I was laughing all the way to Shoppers Drug Mart..

Use to live in Windsor, Ontario.. the river is a blessing.

Seriously, they should consider leasing Detroit to China like what China did to Britain some 120 years ago. Bring the manufacturing to Detroit..

Now you're thinkin'. :)

LOL the whole city is in Obama back pocket, I'm sure they would love the idea.

What choice do they have? I don`t get how 50 years of Walmart mentality relates to Obama. Detroit is a victim of America being in love with the rollback so much they farmed out all their jobs.

Black day in July
Black day in July
The streets of Motor City now are quiet and serene
But the shapes of gutted buildings
Strike terror to the heart
And you say how did it happen
And you say how did it start
Why can't we all be brothers
Why can't we live in peace
But the hands of the have-nots
Keep falling out of reach

Black day in July
Black day in July
Motor city madness has touched the countryside
And through the smoke and cinders
You can hear it far and wide
The doors are quickly bolted
And the children locked inside..

Gordon Lightfoot

Detroit started dying in1968. It depended on Manufacturing , and no one invested . The Race riots were pretty short sighted.

I like this idea. It's the equivalent of a diabetic treating his gangrenous feet by cutting parts away, while never trying to stabilize the underlying illness causing the problem. Just keep cutting boys, get rid of what's not prosperous, while not bothering to try to correct the underlying problem.

BTW Boomer, trying to peg the failure of Detroit, which has been circling the drain for a long time, on one federal employee, rings really hollow. From what I can see of the US as a whole, Detroit's failure seems to be much more hinged on the policies of state and local government, than on the policies of the federal. It seems like the only way the federal government is really in any sort of control over Detroit, is as a safety net.

Ah, but you are failing to consider Obama's nefarious ability to travel in time. He simply popped into the White House time machine, travelled back to the mid-1960s, and used his community organising skills to promote unions, stir up racial unrest, and design forty years worth of useless, crap cars.

It's all part of his eeeee-vil Kenyan Muslim Socialist Plot to Destroy America.

It was about 1968 when buying imported vehicles started getting popular. Perhaps Detroit should have smartened up then and started building reliable vehicles on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. -:)

It's a debate forum. When you show bad logic, people will point it out.

Time for the DDR - Detroit Democratic republic...

East German Propaganda - Bing Videos

Seriously:
the trigger for the Detroit riots was the raids on after hours drinking clubs in Black areas by the overwhelmingly white Detroit police "Vice Squads'. http://www.67riots.rutgers.edu/d_index.htm
