Oh, I get it. Because dentists charge too much, Canada should change the law to allow $1000 same-day trips to the US. Because the US does it. So that must mean that US dentists charge less than Canadian dentists.

I think you're saying, no limit on cross border trade, on anything. Agree 100%. Free trade means free trade. No kidding, let's see where the chips fall.

Why would anyone take hours of their life waiting in border line-ups and chance being picked for some random groping and searches to save a dollar or two. I would rather support my local economy and cross-border shopping doesn't do that.

.

It is obviously more than a dollar or two...and the lines are getting longer... hee hee hee.

Wow....& the CAD is worth more than the USD also: XE: (CAD/USD) Canadian Dollar to US Dollar Rate

1.00 CAD =1.02459 USD

My Daughter-in-Law is from Utah. It was almost comical watching her expressions
of shock (the first couple of months up in Canada) when she went into a grocery
store or a restaurants....back when the Utah prices where fresh in her mind.

Same with cosmetics, books, especially cheese, etc...

What percentage of the population of Canada lives within an hour's drive of the
border with the U.S.??

It takes money and politics to make a country. Things are cheaper in the US because it's a huge market, Canada is not. But we're supposed to get the benefits of this huge market with the FTA and NAFTA, without getting the US's poltiical system. We definitely don't have the US's political system, and we'll never get all their economic benefits. It's only politically Canadian to put up with food marketing boards, they don't have to be.

Has any economist ever done a study forecasting what would happen if there was consumer free trade between the two countries, or in the world?

Some of the reasons that things are more expensive in Canada have to do with company structures. Often, there will be a Canadian subsidiary of the US parent, and the Canadian subsidiary will buy the goods from the US parent, mark it up, and sell it in Canada. So, quite often, Canadians pay an extra layer of markup for no good reason.

That is an argument for more competition because some are taking advantage of the situation here. Corporate interests may conflict with consumer interests. The customer is not yet king here yet.

There is also the concept of consumer sovereignty, which corporations don't always go for because they don't have to.

I always thought it would be nice if consumers got to deduct all the expenses they acquire when 'chasing down goods to buy' since the ones who do all they have to to put it in place to buy get to do that very thing.
